It might. I am trying hard to remember if I own any other recordings by Szeryng and I can't remember, which means that If I have any I haven't listened to them too often.

 

I bought another Bach Sonatas and Partitas due to his tone. I got the Grumiaux (thanks, Robin!)

 

Now enjoying this, from the big Rubinstein box. Gotta love that cover!

 

I have more questions about the sound of the trios than the sonatas. They sound fine to me.

 

I don't have the Szeryng/Rubenstein recordings and I don't know what RCA used to record them. Of many later recordings of Szeryng, I don't mind his tone on the recordings.

I rather like some of his interpretations. I have on LP:
Szeryng and Collegium Musicum - some Bach violin concertos.
Szeryng and Dorati - Mendelssohn and Schumann violin concertos.
Szeryng and Gennady Rozhdestvensky - Sibelius and Prokofiev violin concertos.
Szeryng and Hans Schmidt-Isserstedt - Beethoven violin concerto
Szeryng, Starker, and Haitink - Brahms Double Concerto

 

What is the piece here? I see it's Ormandy/Philly.....

Delighted to have received my Rubinstein box yesterday in England. Bought via ImportCDs: perfect condition, every CD present and an amazing bargain at under $100 including shipping. I can breathe out now.

I notice that they list it as 'unavailable' now, so I wonder if it was a pricing error? Seemed unbelievably cheap.

 

Not a pricing error, they only had about 90 of them. You'd be surprised how many people watch this thread. The last time I posted a good deal in this thread, it was sold out before I could even order a copy for myself!

I really enjoyed this album. Unfortunately for me my copy was lost in a fire on Christmas eve, 1984.

 

A thoroughly enjoyable collection of Strauss Tone Poems from Reference Recordings arrived yesterday. Highly recommended.

Thanks for the link. The reviewer has it sized up well. By comparison this ALSO does a number on Reiner's recordings in both sound and performance.

 

Rubinstein: The Complete Album Collection

Cannot believe how the price has fallen on this. Bought it when it came out on zon last February @ $250.00 & now can be had for $100 or less. It is probably my favorite purchase, but..... nutz.Grab this puppy while you can. Need to get a bio book on this guy.

 

It turns up.I have seen at least three copies of the London in the last five years,both UK and Dutch pressings.

 

People bought copies,ripped 'em,and flipped 'em.

 

They were edited with PCM and then run through the DSD encoder.

 

What's PCM and DSD?

 

The one line answer is Pulse code modulation is the digital encoding method used by CDs
(whatever their encoding rate) and Direct stream digital (pulse density modulation) is the digital encoding method used by SACDs. This is not the thread for extended technical discussions. You can go to wikipedia or search within the Hoffman site for explanations of what is going on in each method.

Cunning Little Vixen, Leos Janacek. Neumann, Novak Czech PO. ProArte 1980.

This is the second recording by Neumann of this wonderful opera. The first was in late 50s mono with the Prague National Orchestra. Mackerras recorded his version around the same time with Popp as the Vixen. It is more Viennese than Czech but a nice issue nonetheless.

 

I tried reading wikipedia but couldn't understand a thing. Isn't it just another marketing nonsense like high resolution audio?

 

The merits of high resolution formats has been the topic of a multitude of threads in the audio hardware forum. Let's not introduce it here except in the context of the sound quality of a particular recording.
