Does Speakers Corner reissue recordings from any other labels? I have never heard of the name.

None of these approach the audiophile quality of Decca and some EMIs of this era. Even the Shaded Dogs are quite superior on average: hence my description as mediocre (which does not mean terrible). The tulips tend to be more opaque than shrill. Some sound reasonably good such as the HvK 60s stereo Beethoven and the earlier the better, rather like the US Columbias. As I noted the Speakers Corner reissues sound noticeably better so part of the problem is the initial mastering in addition to the recording. I think we are in violent agreement.

The first time I heard Zinman's Beethoven symphonies, I had no idea it was considered HIP. It blew me away though. His 4th and 8th were the first versions that really grabbed me. They're still my favorite versions and the entire cycle is one if my favorites.

I'm hoping his Schumann cycle will do the same. I've never heard a version of a Schumann symphony that did anything for me.

At the other extreme, I really dislike his Mahler and Richard Strauss.

I like these Zacharias/Zinman also. So I picked up the EMI Music Germany box set from 2011 that has all 21 piano concertos with various conductors - Zinman, Wand, Marriner, and Maksymiuk.

The Schumann cycle is better than the Beethoven. Zinman's Mahler is pretty much pointless.

I agree with Zinman's Mahler. Pretty flat and without any personality.

Hope you have more willpower than I.:o I haven't gotten all the way thru the box, so I can't review it as a box set yet.

I bought the Zinman's Beethoven Symphonies a number of years ago. I really cannot say it is one of my favorites and I have some 25 cycles.

I think I would rather spend money to get better DAC in order to get better sound out of my CD's than spending new money on LP's, which I have not bought in over 20 years ...

Probably not. I still have a little over 4000 classical LP's, which are mostly European labels due to their better press quality and I have also preferred European ensembles. I have a few fully functional turntables that I can use ...

No problem! I like his piano quartets on the same label, so I am sure it's good.

I already have the Perahia and Anda sets, plus tons of great singles/doubles/triples by Haskil, Casadesus, Serkin, Schnabel, Rubinstein, Edwin Fischer, Moravec, Kempff and Annie Fischer. So I am more than set for Mozart PCs.

I have been playing some of these pieces the last few days. If anyone is interested in the subject of the sea in music, then Tintagel and The Garden of Fand are definitely worth hearing.

She played one of the Bach partitas from this for an encore when I saw her live in Philadelphia. Pretty stunning.

RRB. I find most live performance pretty stunning because reproduced sound is never quite the same as live performance. I have fewer than five recordings by Hilary Hahn, though I have many recordings by Julia Fischer, Hahn's German competitor ...
