Classical Corner Classical Music Corner (thread #51)

So this was a special project for Ward Marston at Naxos. Truly amazing, a century old sound. I just finished listening to a mostly pre WWII recording by Furtwangler. His 1938 Wagner Parsifal Overture is still among the best that was ever recorded. Not sure who did the remastering but it was a job well-done.

 

Thank you George and John and the rest for your suggestions for Moravek. I was looking at that box set of multiple composers just last night on line. If someone says a particular recording is their second best, it means to me that it is very worthy even without knowing their #1, personal taste and all that. I don't have a deep experience with classical music but I am particular about certain things as I am with other music, though in some ways I am less critical due to that lack of experience. Did that make sense? I'll focus on Moravec's solo recordings as it is usually a preference of mine. I'll be taking notes and acting accordingly. Thanks again.

Anyone know of a place where I can get a decent deal on STANDARD Blank Jewel Cases? (USA)
NOT those wimpy thin things.
I'm looking for ones I can replace cracked or severely scratched ones I get.

 

Staples is best place I have found. Convenient and inexpensive.

 

For a while I had my eye on some ten-packs of double CD jewel boxes at my local Staples. (I am jinxed with dropping and breaking almost all of my Philips 2-fers.) Last time I went in I discovered they sold off all the jewel boxes half price. They don't carry any CD-Rs anymore either.

 

My favorite recordings of Frank's Symphony in D (no ranking order):

3) Dimitri Mitropoulos - Minneapolis SO (1945)

I missed the "c" in Franck's name, damn you ipad!
Monteux' s recording with the CSO from RCA (Living Stereo) and available on SACD is also very good. In addition, Monteux has an earlier recording made again with San Francisco in the early 40s but the sound is atrocious.

Part of a early Christmas present from a fellow Classical buff from here.
I was offered 16 titles in pristine condition some are 2cd one was a 12cd for nothing!
Just outta the clear blue! I offered to pay and it was refused......shipping alone a fair amount.
Just shows there is great bunch of Classical buffs here....
My collection wouldn't be what it is without this forum and my friends here.

Anyway I got this rare import that was part of the 16 on the spin and it's GREAT!
A Marston transfer even....originally recorded 1928-29

Anyone finds a good deal on these 2 below on a bargain table or the like lemme know.
If I can get em for a good price....I'd like to make a complete volume set of it.

Jim, I bought regular CD jewel cases from sleeve city a number of times.

 

They don't make them like they used to back in the 80s.

 

Mr. Download will NEVER need any replacement jewel cases ...

 

I like having the physical copy and the art work tho!
It's like being a quality book collector and giving in and downloading all my books on a Kindle.
Just ruins the fun and value of collecting IMHO

Yeah I hear ya.......those Digipaks are a bummer also.
Once they are worn that's the end of em.
Really hard to keep those like new!
