    Welcome to the Hoffman Forum.

Actually, I've sold Classical titles here. Admittedly, most that sold were SACDs. But give it a shot and be sure to mention the classified post in the Classical Corner.

I hope so. I hardly have any Bach, but something has clicked suddenly!

Bruckner: Te Deum. Barenboim, Popp, Janet Baker, Robert Tear, New Philharmonia Orch. EMI UK.

An appealing melodic Te Deum and a good recording. I really like early Barenboim and am sad that I just cannot listen to his post 1980 performances.

Ormandy's Rachmaninoff is great! My first and still my favorite set of the symphonies.

What is the best sounding Rachmaninoff Piano Concerto No. 3 on redbook CD or SACD? I have only RCA RCD1-2633 (pressed by Denon Japan), which features Horowitz in 1978 I believe.

SQ isn't all that high on my list of favorites. Byron Janis on Mercury is one of them "Audiophile Favorites":

I'm fond of Argerich, live and on fire with Chailly for Philips. Probably not the best sound but by no means bad.

That Janis Rach 3 is as good as it gets for performance, IMO and the sound aint too shabby either.

And, of course, the SACD is out of print.

And very pricey. However, the very nice sounding redbook version is reasonably priced at around $11.

A personal favorite complete set, this is cooler and more restrained than most, beautifully recorded, Abbey Simon/Leonard Slatkin, St. Louis S.O. on Vox:

One of the best recorded versions I know of is Andsnes and Pappano. The performance is also great, Andsnes is an amazing pianist. The Byron Janis recording is very bad in terms of sound quality in my opinion, thin, harsh, loud and has a weird stereo image.

My mistake, actually the Rachmaninov 3 of Byron Janis doesn't sound that bad, I had in mind his Prokofiev 3.

I was speaking of the redbook CD. I have not heard the SACD.

IIRC the redbook was included in the first MLP box. I should do a comparison with the (88.2/24) download which is a conversion of the SACD (by Bruce A. Brown). As I recall the redbook layers of the SACDs were not remastered for that release, so I expect there will be a noticeable difference.

I'll try to track down an old, used redbook. I seriously hope no one is paying over $50 for the SACD.

I see you have a Logitech Transporter. Any reason you're not going for the download? $17.99 less whatever discount they're offering.

Transporter interface (S/PDIF) to the far, far superior Cary DAC is not as good as CD. If only each supported the new asynchronous USB! Additionally, I'm not a fan of over-priced downloads.

I suppose I'll fire up the hard drive again someday, but for now, I'm doing it old school.
