No, but she is quite tolerant of my collecting and is also a great appreciator of music.

A true soul brother. Very important. Grab her, they are not many around and I have already married one of them...

We used to travel all over Europe to go to concerts. Now with the kids and the unfortunate cirmustances in Greece, we no longer can do it often enough. She studied the piano for long and has a degree. I taught her how to *enjoy* the music - and how important is to have a wall of Mahler :agree:!!

    Awesome!

I don't know if you ever saw this in my profile: "Born and raised in New England, studied music in college, now I enjoy it instead."

Have I told you that this super deal Amazon had a month ago for this Naxos box (12 GBP), actually arrived properly?

    That's great!

Mine arrived damaged from zoverstocks (the CDs were Ok, though) and after a fairly lengthy battle with the seller and then the A to Z team, I got all of my money back and did not have to return the set.

From the back cover of Leo Kottke's first album on Tacoma records.

Our playlist today, a happy Saturday with no kids parties, enough cold and Chritstmas spirit, consisted of the following:

    [IMG] [IMG] [IMG] [IMG]

and a marvelous live recording broadcast yesterday of a concert held in Freiburg (Germany) with the soon defunct SWR Symphony Orchestra under Teodor Currentzis and Nicolai Lugansky (piano) in a truly wonderful program:

Richard Wagner: Vorspiel zu "Tristan und Isolde"
Ludwig van Beethoven: Klavierkonzert Nr. 5 Es-Dur op. 73
Sergej Prokofjew: Sinfonie Nr. 7 cis-Moll op. 131

    (Liveübertragung aus dem Konzerthaus Freiburg)

    Sendung vom Freitag, 6.12. | 20.03 Uhr | SWR2

    SWR Sinfonieorchester Baden-Baden und Freiburg
    Nikolai Lugansky (Klavier)
    Leitung: Teodor Currentzis

How did you like the Zimerman Impromptus?

I still need to listen to his Chopin Ballades again RE: the recent BBC survey on those works.

The gave me an "impromptu" feeling, a freedom of phrasing rather as an intention than a fulfillment. Otherwise, nothing extremely revelatory. But his toucher is impeccable - a million of dynamics.

Actually, I was just being flip for the sake of a silly joke--although I'd certainly love to latch onto a copy of Fried! I do have some Mahler on 78s; as condensed from my catalogue entries:

Mahler: Das Lied von der Erde. Thorborg, Kullman/Vienna Phil. Or./Bruno Walter. CCol set M-300, 7 12".
    Mahler: Kindertotenlieder. Rehkemper; or./Horenstein. Vox set 644, 3 12".
Mahler: Lieder Eines Fahrenden Gesellen (Songs of a Wayfarer) -- Ging Heut Morgen Uber's Feld (I am going through the field this morning). Blanche Thebom; Or./Boult. RVicSPS E0-RC-2504, 12" vinyl.
Mahler: Lieder Eines Fahrenden Gesellen (Songs of a Wayfarer). In German. Carol Brice/Pittsburgh S.O./Reiner. CCol set MX-267, 2 12".
    Mahler: Symphony no. 04 in G. Philharmonic-Sym. Orch. of N.Y./Walter. CCol set MM-589, 6 12".
    Mahler: Symphony no. 05 in c-Sharp. PSONY/Walter. CCol set MM-718, 8 12".
    Mahler: Symphony no. 09 in D. VPO/Walter. RVic set DM 726, 10 12".

Large as some of these sets are, they pale compared to things like complete operas or the Bach B Minor Mass. Or, of course, Schnabel's complete Beethoven sonata cycle!

His Chopin concertos (the one with the Polish Orchestra) really blew me away! Until hearing those recordings, I really didn't much like the works.

His Debussy Preludes are impressive as well.
