I listened to the Davies through my second system (Thiel 1.5 speakers spec'd at down 3db at 42 Hz) and could barely hear the music much of the time. My tinnitus probably didn't help although the ringing is in a much higher register. I hate the thought that it might be affecting my music appreciation to that extent.

I'll try it on my main system which goes about 6 Hz deeper. Or maybe headphones.

Do you have Kuniko's Reich disc?

This is the first album of hers that I own. The Reich album is in my long to buy list. Since I'm a sucker for mallet music, it's high on the list

    Bachauer's is an underrated/overlooked masterpiece!

I downloaded this from HDtracks yesterday and am listening now. I'm guessing the same mastering that was used for the SACD.

I had those piano quartets on an Odyssey LP many moons ago. On CD, I have had Malcolm Bilson on fortepiano (which I like much more than his concerto cycle). Now I have Rubinstein and members of the Guarneri Quartet as well.

I have the latter and this one [IMG] , which I like a lot.

After hearing Fiorentino talk about Rachmaninoff, I now wanted to hear him play Rachmaninoff. My first impressions a few years back were not so good. This time I am liking it a lot more:

Haven't heard this before, a powerhouse quartet and some wonderful old fashioned music making from a forgotten but great conductor.

I debated picking this up on lp, but went with the Solti. Looks interesting!

The reviews on Amazon for the OOP Beethoven set are astoundingly good. Almost always there are some negatives but for Schmidt-Isserstedt they are all positive. Grab it if you find it.

Oh this is from the Decca Analog set. Some excellent recordings in there.

Schmidt-Isserstedt wasn't the most imaginative or personal conductor but he gave very solid performances. As you note he had a great quartet and a magnificent recording here at least on vinyl (as did Ansermet with a lesser orchestra than the VPO). Decca has been quite variable in their digital transfers so I don't know which CD edition is the one to pick up. My favorite 9th is by Stokowski but I listen to this with enthusiasm as well. S-I also did a very good Eroica and 7th symphony in this cycle. I would pass on his Sym 1, 2 and 8 though.

So I did listen to it through phones, but I wasn't sold on it. I prefer her recordings of Part and Reich. Wondering if she should tackle Feldman? I suspect if he were alive he wouldn't be more resistant to transcription than the other composers.

Now taking a break from the Karajan '77 and Wand Beethoven cycles to listen to this old disc:

DG titles are often described as non hi-fi but sound quality on this one is very, very good, so are the performances.
"Rhapsody in blue" is played here in its "Jazz Band Version", orch. by Ferde Grofé. Beautiful!

Many argue that the gold standard for the symphonies is Klemperer. I have a few of his on LP and I love them. One day I'll check out the S-I. Deccas from that era do sound amazing.
