Interesting for me when he mentioned doing the M. Butterfly play in London back in 1989 as I was working at the Shaftesbury Theatre during the plays run. I got to meet Hopkins a number of times around the theatre. That summer we had a barbecue on the roof of the theatre as we’d just done a Sunday benefit performance in aid of the Tiananmen Square protest. We all chatted with him as he was very approachable. He told us his favourite films were the Carry On films! We had a leaving party for him that October (where he signed my copy of The Elephant Man novel) and I asked him what he was going to do next. “Oh I’m off to the States to make a movie with Jodie Foster”. Lovely, down to earth chap and of course a fabulous actor.

Screen legends Jodie Foster and Anthony Hopkins deliver sensational, Oscar-winning performances in this spellbinding thriller based on the bestselling novel by Thomas Harris (Red Dragon, Hannibal). A psychopath nicknamed Buffalo Bill (Ted Levine, Heat) is murdering women across the Midwest. Believing it takes one to know one, the FBI sends trainee Clarice Starling (Foster, The Accused) to interview a demented prisoner who may provide clues to the killer’s actions. That prisoner is psychiatrist Dr. Hannibal Lecter (Hopkins, Nixon), a brilliant, diabolical cannibal who agrees to help Starling only if she’ll feed his morbid curiosity with details of her own complicated life. As their relationship develops, Starling is forced to confront not only her own hidden demons, but also an evil so powerful that she may not have the courage—or strength—to stop it! This terrifying masterpiece co-starred Scott Glenn (The Challenge) and garnered five Academy Awards, including Best Picture, Best Director for Jonathan Demme (Philadelphia) and Best Adapted Screenplay for Ted Tally (Before and After), only the third film in history to sweep the these five categories.

Here are the Criterion features that I don't think are on the upcoming Kino release.

-Audio commentary from 1994 featuring director Jonathan Demme, actors Jodie Foster and Anthony Hopkins, screenwriter Ted Tally, and former FBI agent John Douglas
-New interview with critic Maitland McDonagh
    Storyboards

PLUS: An introduction by Foster and an essay by critic Amy Taubin, and (Blu-ray only) pieces from 2000 and 2013 by author Thomas Harris on the origins of the character Hannibal Lecter and a 1991 interview with Demme
