Ok, if Daniel Day wants to play at being retired then it's still Meryl.

The younger and older versions of Jake lamotta
    In raging bull,
    Were phenomenal performance's
Even if the film is at times a bit heavy going!

Obviously superb in the godfather and mean streets,
But now he's in a lot more comedy roles which he plays really well,
Meet the fockers comes too mind.
I think Marlon Brando is a fantastic actor also with just great charisma, much like Orson Welles!

    Fockers( 1999) was fun.
Don’t really like him in the 21st C myself.

Yeah, you've got a good point there Alex.
I guess I do prefer his earlier films especially 1970 to 1990 ish.

Nicholas Hoult is really good. The roles I've seen him do are pretty diverse and he delivers unique performances.

"Best" is pretty difficult but I liked:

Christoph Waltz in Inglorious Basterds and Django Unchained
Philip Seymour Hoffman was a great actor
    Bruno Ganz
    Stellan Skarsgård
    Eastwood and Hopkins

"The Place Beyond The Pines". Shot here in town. Very good film. I respect The Coop for coming back to town for the premiere. Seems like a nice guy.

    OP, where are yours?

No "bests" for me/favorites. Those who have hit largely in the 21st Century...Important actors of this time period & give consistently terrific performances...
& I just plain enjoy! Quickly, off top of head:

    Christian Bale
    Jake Gyllenhaal
    James McEvoy
    Mark Ruffalo

Joaquin Phoenix (can't really know how his career would have been, had River lived, but I'm sure he'd be on this list, too, probably @ top, although he hit big in 20th Century.)
    Sam Rockwell

    :):):thumbsup::thumbsup::thumbsup::thumbsup:

I completely discounted Phillip Seymour Hoffman. As an actor I just miss him. Every performance I have ever seen of his was brilliant. He was the type of actor who made any film better and bad films really good.

Exactly! He played so many great roles and so many little supporting roles that were so memorable. Looking at his filmography I can recall almost all of his roles I've seen. It was so sad that he died at the age of 46. Much too soon.

Well if push come to shove it would have to be Daniel Day-Lewis a master class actor for There Will Be Blood.
