The climax of Coogan's Bluff was shot in Fort Tryon Park, just above 190th Street in Manhattan. It's not a particularly gritty part of Manhattan (many musicians from the New York Philharmonic and the New York City Opera live in the neighborhood), but about a decade ago, I lived two blocks away from the park (not a musician though). It was fun to watch the movie while being so close to the location where the climax takes place, recognizing it in every shot. Coogan's Bluff is the only film, that I know, ever shot in Fort Tryon Park (though the Law & Order shows have filmed there a few times).
Not 70's but...Desperately Seeking Susan...great early 80's NYC Greenwich Village partially filmed near/on St Marks Place!
You didn’t specify you were talking about a TV series in a film thread so I assumed you meant this: The Naked City - Wikipedia The movie, shot partially in documentary style, was filmed on location on the streets of New York Cityand features landmarks such as the Williamsburg Bridge, the Whitehall Building, and an apartment building on West 83rd Street in Manhattan as the scene of the murder.
There's a great DVD of "Naked City" episodes that feature actors who later became famous, like Dustin Hoffman and Martin Sheen.
Technically though you're right. The character of Kojack, (named "Kojack" in this case, but still played by Telly Savalas), was the main one in the TV move The Marcus-Nelson Murders. The TV show was spun off from it, but the movie wasn't considered a pilot originally, as CBS decided to create a show around the character due to the ratings success of the movie.
Had the DVD at one point. Be nice to see again... The Super Cops (1974, Gordon Parks) Behind the scenes spot-
When I was in college, I interviewed for a building security job with one of those cops. I assume he had left the force and was starting a security company but I believe he ddin't wind up getting the building contract. Wow, I had completely forgotten about that until now. Long time ago, back in the 70s.
Released in April 1982: some of this movie was shot in 1979. Hotel Broslin sign - 2 Hubert St. New York, NY. 10013
I remember a show in the late 60s/early 70s on ABC- cop show filmed almost entirely in NYC starring Robert Hooks and Frank Converse - NYPD. I wonder if that's available on DVD- probably tons of great location footage
Not a movie, and not made during the 70s, but HBO's The Deuce provides an amazingly accurate recreation of the sweaty, grimy, bankrupt, immoral, dangerous NYC we all long for.
As somebody who spent WAY too much time in Times Square in the 80s into the early 1990s (when they started the "redevelopment"), I can tell you it was very accurate. I read that 70s/80s porn star/escort Annie Sprinkle was one of the advisors on the show
