Is your main CD player a dedicated CD player or a universal one?

    Hey Kevin,

I currently have an old, but pristine Sony DVD player feeding a Schiit Gungnir Multibit through Blue Jeans digital coax.
I ordered a Simaudio Moon 260DT through Listenup; waiting for it to arrive.
That Gungnir really makes a difference with the old DVD player! I'm anxious to hear how the 260DT sounds after a little bit of "run-in".
I'll keep the old Sony DVD player as a secondary in the bedroom system.

    Have a nice one!

I just upgraded to Denon DCD-1600NE from my Marantz CD5003. I upgraded for the SACD capability, along with the ability to play hi-res data CDs and DVDs:

Supports high-resolution audio sources stored on discs:
MP3, WMA, AAC, WAV, FLAC, Apple Lossless, AIFF and DSD files that have been recorded onto DVD-R/-RW/+R/+RW or CD-R/-RW discs can be played back on this unit.

Not sure what I'll do with the Marantz. It was one heck of a transport.:agree: The internal DAC was on the softer, warmer side, so I used my outboard DAC 99% of the time. I'll need to use the Denon's internal conversion if I want to listen to SACD, so I hope it isn't some brittle, thin-sounding implementation of a Sabre chip...

A dedicated CD player does not play SACDs. I had to choose other.

Both of my systems use universal players so I can play SACDs. It was much easier and cheaper to find universal players than dedicated CD/SACD ones.

Oppo UDP-205 in our main system. For mid-fi fun in my music room this Marantz is still earning its keep. I've found that a bit of mid-fi listening on occasion is good for the soul. :o:)

Vintage B&O CDX. A top loader with classic B&O aesthetic design, and I believe it employs a well-regarded Philips DAC.

It's currently broken, having suffered breakage of its left hinge. I have a donor unit, which I'll replace it with, when I can get around to it.

I purchased my OPPO UDP-205 specifically for 5.1 SACD pleasure; yet, I use it more for enjoyment of iTunes via the OPPOs usb DAC up sampling to 24/192. Now, even AAC files in my iTunes Library sound spectacular. BTW, I would have considered a dedicated SACD Player but I could not find one which would output 5.1 via analog connection to my analog multi-channel preamp sans HDMI.

What’s the drawback to UDPs vs. dedicated CD/SACD players? Can you set up UDPs without a video screen to see all the options? How do UDPs handle DSD? I always wondered why UDPs were so much less expensive than dedicated CD/SACD players. I feel fortunate to have not spent the farm on my dedicated CD/SACD player (to arrive Thursday).

What's the drawback? It takes longer for a disc to load.
In regards to a video screen, I needed to set up my initial settings with a monitor, but after that it's done and no video monitor needed.
    DSD handling? I don't know.
Enjoy your player. What did you get?

    Denon DCD -1600NE.

I almost bought an Oppo UDP about a year ago. I just didn’t know enough to feel comfortable pulling the trigger. Knowing what I know now, I would have done so without hesitation. Such is life. Now, no more Oppo. Lol... You snooze... you lose!

Don’t you need to turn on the tv for it to work, though? I remember that was one of the limitations. Staring at a blue screen.

To enjoy SACDs, or CDs, no monitor needed. To listen to music via usb DAC, yes monitor needed, to set input.

Recently grabbed a Denon DVD-2900 to use as a transport for my Schiit Bifrost Uber. Built like a tank! Have an Oppo BDP-93 in home theater that I’m pulling to see how it sounds in 2-ch. Have an old Pioneer Elite CLD-79 I’m curious to “dust off” and try as a transport. Also trying to find a Pioneer Elite PD-59 to feed my Bifrost. Will update my DAC to Multibit once Schiit releases their new USB standard (and run through all the transports again).
