I believe that he was fond of the B52's before his death and remarked that they were doing something similar to what Yoko did.

The Byrds? Or were they mostly admired by George and Macca

“Ticket To Ride” sounds rather Byrds-influenced, as does George’s “If I Needed Someone”.

Competitive? Battle of the Bands? Music isn’t a competition.

If you mean which of John’s contemporaries did he admire, well...Harry Nilsson was a big one. David Bowie. Elton John.

He liked Dave Edmunds I Hear You Knockin'

Also it bears noting that he has said that he stopped listening to Dylan with both ears maybe sometime @ motorcycle crash time.

My feeling is that he had a hard time hearing new sounds. It happens to all of us.

He was friends with Michael Nesmith. He was in the studio for "A Day in the Life".

He compared them to the Marx Brothers

My first thought (in the 70s) was Elton John.

Back in the old days, musicians wanted to place high on the charts. Or have a lot of fans.

Harry Nilsson would be the most obvious. Which is odd, since Nilsson actually did "granny music."

In his solo years I think the only people he considered to be peers were McCartney, Jagger, and Dylan, possibly Clapton and Keith. I think with Elton and Bowie he was more of a friend than a fan, though with Nilsson I guess he was friend and fan. He seemed to be into reggae and ska, and talks about Marley at one point on the 1980 vocal booth recordings.

He made some admiring comments about Zappa/Mothers of Invention, and he and Yoko appeared with them in 1971.

I think the OP's wording is fine. John was competitive. Especially with Paul.

Paul/Wings would be my first pick.
