There's such a great little film hiding in plain sight in "The Swimmer" but ultimately it is undercooked and clunky. If it only was made a few years later during Hollywood's Golden Age it would have been a marvel. It definitely needs a loving remake, perhaps with Jon Hamm in the lead?

I was 9 or 10 when I saw 2001 on its initial roadshow release, and it was probably the first revelatory experience of my life. I would be a different person today had I not seen it.

The Swimmer, flaws and all, though it’s really a 1966 movie. It’s totally drenched in the feeling of that year, and probably would have come off better if it hadn’t gotten caught postproduction hell and been released that year.

Every year was so different from the previous in that decade, it’s little wonder the film seemed out of date by’68.

"Planet of the Apes" is my favorite from your list (my favorite movie of any movies actually), but the other three that I posted from your list are also very good ones...

Those are two lovely, underrated films. I was particularly impressed with Alan Arkin and Sondra Locke in The Heart is a Lonely Hunter.

Even though it won the oscar , Oliver seems to have lost favor over the years. I still think it is great old fashioned entertainment with a great cast. Ron Moody is mesmerizing as the rouge Fagin, and Oliver Reed is well cast as the brutish, menacing Bill Sikes

A real interesting curio is the short film Toby Dammit by Federico Fellini. It was one of three short film from a movie called THE SPIRITS OF THE DEAD. However, it is often released on its own because it is so bizarre that it made the other two films forgettable. It is very, very loosely based on the Poe story. The protagonist is now a drunk, obnoxious actor who has been casted in a terrible spaghetti western. The devil is a beautiful young girl.
