That's odd. Would those inserted fade-outs be a 2nd gen copy spliced onto the actual session recording?

Looks like it says "FADED ENDINGS & BEGINNINGS INSERTED CRISCROSS @ END OF REEL".

That's right. You understand we are talking about clapping, correct?

I prefer maximum transparency in my clapping. ;)

    Steve,

A question about the picture of the cutting head in action:

When the cutting head is in use, does it create lacquer shavings as it cuts the groove, or is the lacquer soft enough to allow the head to depress the groove into it? I didn't see any shavings in the photo, so I wasn't sure if they had been removed up to that point or if none are created. Forgive me if this seems like a silly question. I hadn't really considered it until now.

It's called "thread". The thread is sucked up via a vacuum hole in the cutter head and collects in a big bag. The "anti-groove" if you will.

One match tossed into that bag and Ka-Boom!:)

Ah, thanks. I guess that question would've made for a good "thread" thread. :)

Actually, for some reason It didn't occur to me that the fade outs were just clapping. I was more interested in what they did physically to the tape for the fade vs. any generation loss stuff or whatever. That's neat.

Perhaps I spliced back in the first generation clapping and did my own fade outs......;)

    Steve,

Just curious. It seems as if a handful of recordings are constantly reissued by various audiophile labels. CD. DVD. SACD. LP 33 1/3. LP 45 RPM. Gold CDs.

How many times can the old master tapes handle the wear and tear of repeated tranfers?

Not really wear and tear. Old tape is strong. Exercising is sometimes good for 'em!

how many plays do the have before they begin to noticeably degrade?

Well, it depends on the type of machine the tape is played on. On our machine, maybe 300 times....

Think about this. Take an album like the Miles Davis Quintet "Cookin'". It was recorded on Scotch 111. The tape was sequenced on two reels, and a lacquer cut and an EQ cutting master made. So from the 1950's until 1968 (when the fake stereo version came out), the original tape was probably only used that one time.

The next time it was used, Fantasy took over the catalog, and there was one pass for the OJC LP, and one pass for the digital safety, which was used for all CD production work.

DCC used the tape to make their Gold CD, and Analogue Productions used it to make their Miles LP for the box set as cut by Stan the Man Ricker.

Maybe it was used a few more times, and I used it to cut 45's last month.

So, the original tape has probably only been actually used about 12 times in 46 years.

Hey, maybe you could make a bag up for the next prize. "The anti-groove of side 1 of Art Pepper Meets the Rhythm Section". I'd put it on my wall!

    Mike, semi-seriously
(actually, if you want to box some up and sell it....)

    Good idea, Mike.

I knew there could be a use for the anti-groove, I just didn't know what it was. ;)
