I have a Sony BDP-S5100 (Bluray player that can play SACD). I want to hook it up to my Peachtree Novapre 2.1 system in my listening room (audio only). My issue is that the Sony only has HDMI and Digital Coax out. The Novapre has Digital Coax in, but no HDMI. From doing some research on here, i won't be able to take advantage of the hi-res audio from SACD or BD-A using Digital Coax.

Is there any way to get the most out of hi-res in this set up?

Yes, get an A/V receiver with HDMI or a Preamp-processor with HDMI. HDCP should be outlawed.

HDMI interface is HDCP-compliant by default, IIRC...

You could potentially use an HDMI de-embedder. This device would of course convert the DSD to PCM, then to analog. You have a lot of potential for poor sound from one of these devices. You might be better off considering a different player with traditional analog outputs.

    Novapre = $1000
    BDP-S5100 =$80

I would throw the Sony away before replacing the Peachtree.

^ Exactly. Get a player with analog out.

I guess I will use the Digital Coax until I can upgrade.

I agree. Many SACD player options (new and used) that have analog outputs.

That is a nice pre-amp. Get a better player with analog outs so you can get the most from your other equipment.

Thanks. I will get a better player eventually.
When I do, I will have to unplug my turntable when I want to listen to SACD/BD-A.:shake:

Definitely buy a better SACD player with analog outputs. Keep your superb gear.

Nice pre-amp, a shame it only has a single analog input.

Is it worth it? Do you think it will sound better than the digital coax out of the bluray player into the digital coax in on the preamp/DAC

Running it through that HDMI converter will probably make the sound very crappy. I'd run straight into your preamp/DAC.

I figured you were just interested in the converter for SACD playback.

I am interested in getting the best sound playing a few BD-A discs I have now and possibly some SACD's in the future.

Is what worth it? I'm a bit confused.

Optic cannot carry more than CD resolution, and coax only somewhat better. Certainly neither is set up to send DSD data! I'm sure something is output, but either down sampled to PCM, or just sending the CD layer.

Your disc player and preamp aren't really compatible. End of story, sorry. You really need a disc player with a great analog section if you're keeping that preamp. Maybe an Oppo.
