I found this on Youtube. There's only a couple of hundred views. The video (and several others on the same channel) document the closing of the Bill Putnam designed Universal Recording Co (address #3) at 46 E Walton in Chicago. It was open from roughly 1956 to 1990 when this move was taking place.

The first video shows Studio A, B, & C. Other videos show the original echo chambers on the roof, the film dubbers, the basement full of reverb plates, the sound effects library, & the tape library.

The building itself was designed by famed architect Bertrand Goldberg although I guess the building may have had the "Chicago Rehab" (leave 1 wall up and demo everything else) a few times. The brick wall along the alley looks older than mid 50s to me.

Malcolm Chisholm, who engineered many of Chess's great blues and R&B giants from the mid-1950s through the 1970s--Chuck Berry, Bo Diddley, Muddy Waters, Elmore James, Howlin' Wolf, John Lee Hooker, Sonny Boy Williamson, Little Walter, Jimmy Rogers, Otis Rush, Lowell Fulson, Etta James, Ahmad Jamal, Sonny Stitt, Ramsey Lewis.

When I lived in Chicago in the late 1990s, I got to attend a party at the Chess studio, which was being rehabbed at the time. Met Phil Chess, Leonard's son Marshall (Rolling Stones records exec), Buddy Guy, Willie Dixon's widow. But one of my favorite moments was I got to talking with an elder gent who turned out to be Mal Chisholm. He spun some great tales, mostly along the lines of Leonard Chess' expletive-filled arguments with Sonny Boy, Walter and Wolf.

No longer with us, but judge for yourself--hundreds of Chess classics.

Ah...I was just looking for a photo of this guy for this thread! He recorded Chuck Berry's "Maybellene" at Universal Recording (Location 2...Onterio St) in their small studio 2 which in an interview he said was too small of a studio to contain that "sound". Interesting guy...he got out of the biz and became an instructor at Columbia College in Chicago.

Here's the interview from 1991 if anyone is interested.

You need to post the photos somewhere (Flickr works well), and then link to them here using IMG tags.

Are they your pictures or pictures on the web? If they are your pictures you have to host them somewhere, flickr as mentioned, I have used facebook actually, then right click over the pic at the hosting site and you should be able to copy the image address. Come back here to your post and hit the image button on your post’s toolbar and paste the image address into the box. If the pic is already on the web, you should be able to use the same process if it is not copyright protected. I have found using this process on a phone does not always work as the phone can assume everything is copyright protected.
