If it's 10 minutes long, it'll be less boring than the original.

When we were working on Dances with Wolves, Costner came in to approve the final HD. My assistant actually approached him at the end of the session and blurted out, "I really loved Waterworld!" And Costner kind of grinned and winced and said, "ah, YOU were the one!"

WEll it didn't do as bad as the mailman movie at the box office.

Guy jumps off boat, swims to the bottom to get dirt.

Couldn't he just throw a bucket over the side of the boat, let it sink and pull up some dirt?

Couldn't the people on the floating island do the same thing?

The favorite part for me was using the Universal logo as part of the films's intro:

I liked the beginning and thought that the plot was developing along nicely.

    And then...

    It started going downhill...

OK, maybe the film wasn't great but at least I didn't feel like kicking myself after watching it.

I just thought that it got stupid toward the end.

It had so much going for it at the beginning.

People made fun ot it because of how much it cost to make and how poorly it was initially received at the box office.

But it did not loose money and came out a bit ahead.

I liked the other post apocalyptic movie, The Postman a lot better, and it lost money. Go figure?

    Of course, when a movie has a famous quote like;

    Postman:
"The President's name... is Richard Starkey!"

the movie can't help but do well on this forum. :)

Hey given the current “climate” I got a feeling people may give this movie it’s due in the future. I could be up for a sequel to tell you the truth.

That is great. But they should've used the Minions version of James Horner's Universal theme song...

It went about 4 months over schedule, $75 million over budget (ballooning up to an unheard-of cost of $175 million back in 1995 dollars, which would be $286 million today), and only made $264 million. Bear in mind the studio gets less than 75% of what the theaters take in, plus they spent another $50 million on advertising, that movie will never break even. (I disagree with the assessment that it broke even with home video, because you have to factor in the interest the production kept racking up over the years.)

It also cost Costner his friendship with longtime associate Kevin Reynolds, whom Costner (as co-producer) fired when the movie went over schedule. The movie continued the long-held belief that any big movie that tries to shoot at sea -- as Steven Spielberg found out with Jaws -- is going to be fraught with trouble.

    Never saw that.... Completely funny!

I liked The Postman, I understand that it cost 80M to make, but it bringing in only 20M WW, is another mystery to me.

I always thought that Waterworld lost money and I had read an article explaining otherwise.

I thought the movie started out strong and that he had a very neat boat. Well done. Then we see the man-made Island set and I'm thinking, "boy did this cost some major $$$ to construct". For me, the movie went downhill from there.

Why on earth would anybody spend $175M to make this movie is beyond me.

Years back, Andrew Laszlo, A.S.C., was at out local film festival and was talking about filming the water scenes in Shogun. YOu could understand the challenges he was talking about.

Blaming Kevin Reynolds for cost overruns on this movie is ridiculous.

I would think that the studio's would be making a lot more percentage wise, than years ago, when they had huge distribution costs associated with making and distributing release prints in film format. With digital releases, all of those costs are no longer there.
