Easily Bruce Springsteen. If we're talking mindless but effective banter though, probably Paul Stanley.

Randy Sparks has a lot of humorous tales. Sometimes, he'll tell them more than once during a show!

Since other solo performers are being bandied, have to nominate Arlo Guthrie.

    (And another shout for RT.)

Phil Collins--funny and self-deprecating, clearly inspired by Steve Martin and Monty Python
Alison Krauss--great, dry sense of humor and slightly off-center observations
Leonard Cohen--humble, joyful, self-aware, and dry as a good martini

Well, you could have been in the back to read those lips, to tell the truth.

Springsteen...especially if you catch him in a city where he's got some history. In Boston, I've heard him lovingly mock the Boston accent ("I got the guitah in the cah and it's pahked in the yahhd"). In Richmond, Bruce talked about how he and his band (Steel Mill) had two places where they could make money - New Jersey and Richmond. He then said "You don't forget things like that". In Worcester, Bruce says "We doesn't get around this way as much as we used to" a reference to the many area colleges he and the E Street Band used to frequent in the early days. In New Jersey...well, it's New Jersey - instead of stories, we got Bruce's mom!

Billy Joel, Harry Connick Jr. and Sara Bareillis deserve mention as well.

Arlo, man I could just listen to that guy rap for hours on end, can ya dig it? His exodus speech at Woodstock actually had me laughing out loud, it's so ridiculous and he's so stoned, but it's just entertaining as hell man

For Neil Young I would say solo more than with a band. With a band he really doesn't say much, but solo he tells some great stories and has some hilarious little lines, plus he has great comebacks to audience shout outs. He's always telling jokes like about writing 126 verses to Sugar Mountain, or suggestion Canada Goose or the Great Illinois Poof as great band names and his banter is always getting a good crowd reaction and laughs.

Wrong thread. This is about the best front men. Mike Love was annoying, jabbered too long, told boring stories and spouted dumb jokes which definitely took the group, and him down in stature. Now if we're talking about the worst front men then he certainly qualifies.
