I'm a huge, massive fan and have been since 1986. I have seen them live thirty-three times in my life and own pretty much everything that they have released. Anyone else a fan, fanatic or collector of the Butthole Surfers? Even though they haven't released anything since 2001's Weird Revolution album, they are still one of my favorite bands to collect and I also have over one hundred hours of live shows on tape from old trades, etc. Tell me your stories, people!
I love their early stuff. Everything from the first EP to Hairway To Steven. After that, they went in a more commercial direction. Independent Worm Saloon and Electriclarryland had their moments. Weird Revolution was very mediocre to me. Humpty Dumpty LSD is excellent and was a nice surprise.
Never seen them live, but I have everything up to 'Piouhgd.' One of these days I'm gonna get around to getting the later albums. Can't explain why I never got HD-LSD; that one I definitely need.
I can't separate their poor business ethics from their music. What they did to Corey Rusk was deplorable. Terrible band.
I have two of their albums. Live at the Forum and this one. I only came across the band for the first time around four/five months ago via my sons music collection. I quite like them. Stu.
I haven't seen them myself in probably over 10 years. Their live shows were totally disorienting and pure madness. I remember having a severe episode of tinnitus after one of them. Then there were the movies of what appeared to be plastic surgery... Compared to live, the recordings didn't even seem to be created by beings who could play musical instruments and the concepts and sounds were crude and amateurish, which I assume was the intention. This was a band that simply had to be seen in concert, sorry you didn't have the chance. I think you would have enjoyed it.
I got "Hairway To Steven" in the bargain bins back in the day. Played it once or twice. It was ok. Brilliant album title.
Yeah, probably - all I have to go on are the 'Blind Eye Sees All' video and the 'Double Live' album. I assume they're not telling the whole story.
Huge fan of their look/album covers/song titles/ideas/interviews/early live stuff/early to mid period albums......
I had everything up to and including Hairway to Steven, and I have to say that I got tired of them over the years. All EXCEPT: Locust Abortion Technician! What a masterpiece of maniacal psychedelic punk!! This one still completely holds up for me. It has no equal that I'm aware of, not even in the Surfers' own discography. 2nd place goes to "Lady Sniff", surely one of the funniest songs ever recorded. If you've got a strong enough stomach for it, that is!
The Bunghole Surfers are the absolute epitomoscopy of geniousity. And then some. Butt they faded late. On Touch and Go, they ruled your world.
Just a reminder that the Latino Bugger Veil remasters are sourced from the old Touch & Go CDs (apart from the first two EPs, which were never on CD previously) Well worth seeking out the original CDs, much closer sound to the LPs. I've compared Hairway To Steven with the original US LP and there is almost no difference.
And the re-released albums were mastered back in 1999. It's time for a new re-master of everything and a box set of unreleased live and studio goodies, in my opinion. As far as what happened to Corey Rusk, that's what happens when you stop paying royalties to a band for half a decade or more. You have to pay the bands that create the music! Duh!
Yes their crazy stage show was probably one of the most bizarre I have ever heard about. Their chapter in our band could be your life was probably my favorite.
One of my top five favorite bands of all time. I know sick huh? Can't help it, I love a band who has no fear nor any consideration whatsoever for commercial appeal. I have pretty much everything they ever released exept a few vinyls which a friend of mine has all of. Nothing can prepare you for the onslaught that is the Buttholes live. They just played at the Pearl here in Vegas less than a year ago and being a Las Vegas Casino Venue there were a lot of unsuspecting soul's who were comped tickets. One of the funniest things I ever saw was the stampede of comps recoiling in horror and heading for the exits within the first 10 minutes! I second the motion that it's time for a box set!
It's great to know that! I've had the pleasure of interviewing the Butthole Surfers three different times in the past from 1988 to 1993 and they have always been amazing and hilarious. In my opinion, they should definitely be in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame since they influenced a ton of bands and since they inspired to want to be in a band. Long Live the Buttholes!
Back in the day, whenever the Buttholes would play gigs in Houston, the local newspaper would never print their name, instead referring to them as the "B-Hole Surfers". Always wondered if newspapers in other cities did something similar.
Never had the chance to see them live, but I do have "Pee Pee the Sailor"....a loving Christmas from my girlfriend (future wife) that wasn't wrapped but had a bow on it, lovingly placed on my front door of my house for all to see. Love that album.
How cool! Anyone found any rare bootleg 7-inch or LP bootlegs of the Buttholes? I have quite a few plus over a hundred hours of live shows that date from 1981 to 2002!
Yes, in my hometown papers they were always billed as BH Surfers. I missed a lot of their gigs because of that.
