Yes, here's another shot of David’s work without the purple cast, as it appears in high quality art books: In the Royal Museum, many of the viewing rooms have skylights. If you zoom in very close on the purple highlight, you should see a perfect reflection of the pattern from one of the skylights: The reason the skylight reflection appears as purple, could be caused by a plethora of variables. To achieve a high quality reproduction of the painting without the skylight reflection, the photographer needed to either block off the painting and provide their own lighting; or shoot it after sundown.
I've always grudgingly admired David, as much for his survival talents as his artistic ones. 'The Death of Marat' is a brilliant painting. Marat himself was a nasty, vicious (and murderous) piece of work. He'd feel right at home on Twitter, today.
For me its anything by Frederick Edwin Church, he was a landscape painter in the 1800s and also a distant relative
I don't actually have a favourite painting, but let's say for the purposes of this thread that it's “Tristan ac Essylt” by David Jones. Like many of Jones's works, it's almost impossible to see it properly in reproduction but its superficial prettiness probably comes across well enough.
I love this one, by Vincent Van Gogh, Starry Night: also like this one, Starry Night Over The Rhone I believe is the title: and then there's this one which I don't know the title of and I find this one incredible Old Man In Sorrow On The Threshold Of Eternity. I think this is the most powerful painting I've ever seen. The top two are among the most beautiful ones I've seen - very melancholy.
I've always been partial to this one: Click For Full-Size Image. Seeing Van Gogh's in person sure is a revelation. It's like live vs. recorded music.
That's what I've heard, that seeing them in person is amazing. Something I will never know. That world is over.
Don’t want to hijack this thread, but this has been bugging me. I was binge watching the TV show the West Wing. In Toby Zeigler’s office there is a framed painting on one of his walls which I can’t identify. I’m not talking about the political posters he has, but a painting in a gold frame. It looks similar to some things by Kandinsky, but I can’t find it online. Anybody know what it is?
I take it you've seen this? Barry Windsor Smith by Michael Netzer. (As marvellous as Smith's work on Conan was, he's not my favourite artist for the character. That would be Frazetta)
I bought this framed print of Stockport Market Place, by Kate O’Brien, for my girlfriend’s birthday. It is nice to be able to support a local artist in these difficult times. Kate hand-delivered it to our home this morning. Kate O’Brien Art- Local artist based in Stockport. Commissions welcome
Stockport is interesting! Well, we do have some lovely buildings and architectural details that often go unnoticed by the general populace. She loves the print, ta. And it was a nice touch for Kate to deliver it in person. We also have a daft old biddy on the tills at Asda. It wasn’t until we got home this afternoon that we realised she hadn’t charged us for a bottle of gin in our shopping. Living in Stockport has its advantages
My brother-in-law once tried to buy Strawberry Studios. I went over the Pennies with him as I wanted to see a genuine music-interest site. Fascinating place. Still had 10cc and Brian & Michael gold discs on the walls. However, it was a foul grey rainy day and I suspect I didn't see Stockport at its best .
Strawberry is just a mile down the road from us. In fact, we walked past it twice today, on our way out then home again. If you’re ever back over this way, the Stockport Museum — which is located on the left-hand row of buildings in the print I posted earlier — is worth a visit. They have a section dedicated to Strawberry Studios, with memorabilia from 10CC and many other artists who recorded there. To keep this thread on topic, if you’re lucky, you can also see a couple of Lowrys in there, including his painting of Crowther Street, which is just up Hillgate from Strawberry, and which we also walked by today.
I’ve mentioned on here before how much the beloved and I like Lowry. We visited the gallery next to Man U’s stadium about 14 years ago. Would love to go back eventually.
Yeah, the Lowry Museum in Salford is fantastic. As is the nearby Imperial War Museum North. In the spirit of northern hospitality, come over to Stockport for the day, when all this COVID craziness is over. We’ll show you around the best of the town, and I’ll buy you a pint of Robbies into the bargain.
Café Terrace at Night. The cafe is in Arles - still there. I visited two years ago. Shamefully, I have yet to see the picture, at the Kröller-Müller Museum in NLD.
