Hey Vinyl Man Another bloody Yank down under...

Zappa is one of those artists I feel like I'm "supposed" to like, but nothing I've heard has ever really done anything for me. Recommendations welcome for what you think ought to appeal to a big classic rock fan.

I have it, will start reading it this weekend. I've been looking forward to this book for a while. I'm certain Charles will not disappoint!

It's only through 2015? Some of the releases I'd love to read about came out after that. Ah well. I'll still get it.

Where to even start? His classic rock period is definitely Apostrophe/ Overnight Sensation. There is also Sheik Yerbouti for a more late 70’s feel.

"An astonishing 15 year work of research, Ulrich has created the ultimate encyclopedia of all Zappa & Mothers recordings. The details of the sessions and of the musicians who participated are as fascinating as one of Frank's best compositions." --Art Tripp, Mothers Of Invention percussionist, '68 -- '69

"Charles Ulrich's The Big Note is your Amazingly Breathtakingly Complete, Definitively Encyclopedic, Frankly Gargantuan, Highly Interesting And Informative, Jaw Droppingly Knowledgeable, Lovingly Monumentally Notoriously Obsessive, Precisely Quote filled, Quintessentially Researched, Stupendously Terrifically Useful, Voluminously Weighty, Xenochronically Yeomanly Zappa centric Guide to Conceptual Continuity. Destined to be the essential Zappa listening companion for the 21st century. "--David Ocker, Zappa copyist, Synclavier assistant, and clarinettist, '77 -- '84

Many many threads here on this. Variations on 'Zappa recommendations for a newbie' is one of the classic SH.tv thread themes. Search 'Zappa' with titles and this forum only checked and you'll find them all. But with all the conflicting recommendations therein though, whether you'll be any more certain of what to try!

The book looks really good. Will have to put that on the Christmas list and hope Mrs K-G's feeling generous.

yeah I agree but with the depth of material here, it must take a long time to compile everything. I may have seen some mentions of later releases, but not individual entries for them (for example, some songs are mentioned as being released on later albums).

I was involved in preparing the book and yes, each chapter did take time so for the book to come out Charles had to stop somewhere.

Been reading the book and it is fantastic. I've been a pretty hardcore Zappa fan for decades and this sucker is loaded with bits of info I had not known about. Simply amazing. This book is a must buy for any Zappa fan. Amazing work.

I've loved Charles' articles and insights about Zappa since the Patio linked me to his website. I will gladly buy a copy of this. It will probably get as much use from me as Robert Campbell's "The Earthly Recordings of Sun Ra (2nd Edition)" (which sorely needs an updated edition).
