I did wonder if this would fall into the "TV shows made to look more appealing with period costumes and soundtracks to cover up substandard story telling" category. :)

I hope it's better than Vinyl.

The biggest draw this project's got going for it is David Simon. But than again, Vinyl had a sterling pedigree team behind it and was awful. Regardless, I'm all in!

I'll watch anything that David Simon is involved with. The Wire was incredible. I thought Treme was an amazing combination of music and an ensemble, multi-plot series. Super psyched for this.

Pilot is up on Direct TV on demand. Not horrible, if somewhat predictable.

Watched the pilot last night. Grim, gritty...and depressing. There is a story to be told about the porn industry in NYC in the Seventies, but I don't particularly want to see it told by this writer. This is Boogie Nights with anything enjoyable drained out of it.

Just watched it and thought it was great! I don't know how he does it, but David Simon somehow always succeeds in making the cities a living breathing character in his tales. What Baltimore and New Orleans were to his Wire & Treme, midtown 70's NYC is to the Deuce. Absolutely reeks with authenticity. It's going to be compared to HBO's prior attempt at this era; Vinyl, and thats a shame as this show is everything that show wasn't. I am absolutely all in! Saw far I've spotted familiar faces from the Wire, Rescue Me, & the Sopranos.

The folks who brought porn to the public broke the law, broke the rules, had a blast and changed the culture. There were bills to pay, you bet. When one goes out on a limb keep your ears open for that cracking sound. But American movies and TV have almost always stressed a humorless, condescending approach to this world and I doubt David Simon is the one to change that.

Every interview I see with NY-era porn actresses like Georgina Spelvin, Vanessa del Rio, Veronica Hart - they are all talking about how much fun they were having. We had a family friend who was a porn actress in that era, and she was proud of her work - she was in several of the most highly rated porn films of the day. So I was interested in this, and it's nothing but grim, grim, grim.

So, I checked this out... since the first episode was directed by Michelle MacLaren....
I want to tell ya', I DID get a bit of a 'smell-memory' from a couple of scenes!
The 'rent-by-the-hour' building, and the scene with Franco alone on the train platform brought back SMELLS I remembered from the 'hand-full' of times I went to 'the city' during my teens (early-to-mid-'80's)!
    Almost creepy!
I was, once, on the Jamaica station platform all by myself, in the middle of the night.... I remember how eerie and quiet the town around me was.... and, the SMELL!

The pilot looks fantastic. Naturally, it's derivative of every 70s trope you can think of (creators just couldn't resist the pavement level shot of Franco in leather platforms a la Travolta in Saturday Night Fever).

However, the intensity of New York City street life is missing. In NYC, particularly Manhattan, the hustle is all. It's an important point that might have informed mistakes like Franco counting the days' receipts out front on the bar. Who does that anywhere? Of all the players it's the pimps who capture the feel of the era. The California boy is out of his element. ;) Also, chicks looking for the million dollar f@ck shot from James are likely to be disappointed. Dominique Fishback's scene with the late show john is sexier. Perhaps that's the intended effect.

Most important, though, is the obvious lack of conflict. What does Franco want? Either Franco? Without characters who really want something there isn't much momentum or drama.

That said, Maggie Gyllenhaal's (Candy) scene with the teenage first-timer makes a viewing worth it.
