The reason why this is in the Visual Arts thread is due to the Looney Tunes reference.

The article mentions the 1930s, but "What's Opera, Doc," is from 1957.

That is hilarious. At last, the legacies of legendary composers admit that its' affect on pop culture is a two-way street, and by showing some sense of humor and whimsy, it neither demeans the reputation of the great creator, nor shows the descendants to be aloof to the universal effects if the original material on society.

I recall the Ravel Estate taking umbrage to both Frank Zappa's and Wendy Carlos' treatments of "Bolero", not done intentionally to diminish the work of the original composer, but to put them into context of what the then-contemporary artists were doing at that time. It showed a lack of respect for the rights of modern composers to attach their own stylistic impulses, to well-known works, almost as if the Estate were afraid somehow it would damage what work already existed. Well, if the original work cannot stand the filters of a more contemporary acknowledgement that the original work was of some value in the first place, it shows little faith of the significance of the Estates' legacy in the first place. By issuing cease-and-desist orders, the Estate did nothing for themselves but show their lack of understanding about the differences between homage and theft.

Which is why, I suppose, instead of great composers themselves, the Estate were merely inheritors, the holders of the rights of property.

Thank Godzilla, the Debussy Estate had no problem with Tomita's exquisite re-imaginings of Claude's music, around the same time as Carlos.

OK but who is responsible for The Ringtone of the Nibelungen? What does the Wagner Estate do about that?

  18. "Those are wabbit twacks!" I'll never hear "Ride Of The Valkyries" the same way again.

EDIT: When I typed this post, my spell check flagged "twacks", but not "wabbit". Is wabbit part of the lexicon now? Vewy, vewy stwange.
