Tasty, classy way to ring in The New Year.

Classical, ballet, composer and location film essays.

    PBS. Check local listings.

Just watching it now. Lord Grantham from Downton Abbey as the host instead of the traditional Julie Andrews. Nice tour of Viennese architecture and landmarks which I don't remember from previous years' shows. Gorgeous music as always.

Hey, Adam! Yes, very classy show. Love the visuals and dance.
For some reason the camera was smitten with that lady flutist.
Always enjoy the final piece performed with audience participation,
Strauss' "Radetzsky March", a nice boot up for the new year!

I missed Andrews, but suspected she'd move on at some point.
Maybe not. Paula Zahn filled in for her one year. Thanks for
iDing the host, didn't know. Did a wonderful job. Supposedly
the conductor has the most returns to conduct?

Great show, as always. Look for repeats!

Disclaimer: Sorry for the misnomer; the show is NOT live and
part of the PBS' "Great Performances" series. So check listings
via "Great Performances". I oughta check the library for past
    years' performances. Hmmm ...

I've only been witness to these shows since 5yrs ago,
yet somehow Cronkite seems familiar in this! Maybe
I saw it once or twice years ago. Been televised since
'59! Methinx PBS has aired it for 34yrs now.

Y'know what I liked best this time? Right! The trad
alps instrument, The Zither! never seen them play
one of those "mountain" instruments before. Very
nice touch. Had to turn her WAY up, though.

Wish they would have focused more on the orchestra IE: the zither soloists - sloppy cutaway to more "history" - I tune in for the music and hoping for a broadcast in 5.1. The dancing is a value added. This show is a tradition "must see" for me. They also have something similar outdoors in the Spring/Summer. Riccardo Muti was not announced in any of the TV Guide announcements. Last year Dudamel's name was all over here in So Cal being a local fav. When is this program taped? Must be a quick turn-around.

I believe it is a quick turn-around. It's taped New Year's Eve in Vienna, no? The credits said 2018.

Agree about the Radetzky March and the many shots of the (I think it was a piccolo) soloist.

It's taped on every 1st of January, roughly between 11:15 a.m. and 2 p.m. which is also the time it's broadcast live here in Austria :) Said live tape then goes into syndication during January, mostly on regional programmes and culture-oriented smaller channels (the live broadcast runs via the biggest austrian broadcasting company, ORF)

@TeacFan I think you mean the Sommernachtskonzert at Schönbrunn Castle. It's always a beautiful concert :)

Television at its best! I read the griping ( a bit justified )
under its own post, still it's so well done it puts me in a
    GREAT mood every time.

    I had a feeling I'd mis-iD the instrument – it's been 30yrs
since I picked up a book explaining the differences. To Hell
with the piccolo, I'd take her!

Hail, Austria! you're very lucky being in one of, if not
THE, music capital of the world! I've been wanting to
visit since a kid. ( Yeah, you know why! )

I am a sucker for "An der schönen blauen Donau" (thank you, von Karajan, Kubrick et al! ) - The 90 minute show comes on here at 9pm on Jan 1st. Crank the amp & drive the neighbors nutz!

I agree! Just wish I could. It's not like I don't have the system for it, but ...

Just snapped up last year's concert at the library.
GREAT liner notes. Amazingly, last year was the
first time The Skaters' Waltz appeared in the
program. Lots of emphasis on Strauss Jr.

    I agree.

The production values – Hell, the turnaround as described above –
truly Herculean. Somebody griped the camera hasn't never focused
much on the ceiling paintings, which is remarkable if true, still a petty
gripe compared to everything. Awesome event. Piccolo player or not.
