Im sure they pulled a bunch of reels out. They remixed all of the songs but true to form the engineer was not an expert on this album and picked the wrong take of Linus And Lucy to remix. If Steven or Bill Inglot had been involved in the project that would not have happened but these guys never think of that. Close enough for jazz is their motto.

Cymbal--probably hit it in a different spot each time. (I don't remember the terminology, but it's the center raised part near where it attaches to the stand.)

On the new Fantasy/Concord issue are there any count-offs or take numbers being announced?

I'll use my 25%-off Borders coupon and pick this up today. Assuming, of course, that I'll actually find it in the store. Always a big assumption when you're looking for a CD at Borders.

I for one am happy for yet another "alternate" take! Anyone in here who loves this cd already has the original and I'd wager the SACD. A bunch of us have the Monster version on top of that and some of us have the vinyl on preorder. thats the only version thats going to matter and I'm sure needledrops of it will be in vogue next holiday season...

So the new version sports 5 alternate takes if you count the extra bonus of the wrong Linus and Lucy. The original is on the original cd as well as the Vince Guaraldi Holiday Hits release.

Maybe they'll be a later run with this title corrected and then we early birds will have "collectors" items...

Thanks RUDY for the .wav file of "Linus & Lucy"....It's crazy, man, crazy to hear two "slightly" different takes, with one in each channel.

I "STILL" think that the new CD is worthy of owning if you're a true blue fan of this album! It will NEVER replace my original version, but is still fun to have, all the same.

If they don't correct it, then this new, incorrect version will be the only one for sale. I'm hanging on to the other versions I have, and while I might get the new one out of curiosity, I certainly can't recommend it based on this error.

I've gotten in the habit of doing online reserves from the website. Then they do the legwork......once in a while I've found something that they gave up on that was incorrectly filed.......such horrors of filing as the (wonderful) new Thelonious Monk DVD on the Jazz Icons series filed under "M", but still I've saved some wasted trips this way.

I picked this one up mostly to hear the "extended" versions and alternate takes, and I must say, this mix is absolutely horrible! All of that gorgeous space that surrounded each of the instruments on the original mix is gone, the stereo placement of the instruments is terrible, the room sound is terrible, etc, etc. etc. This one is going in the trade-in box...

I have an original version (not sure which..I'd have to go to the attic!), and it's a masterpiece to me. Enjoyed every year for quite a while.

Somebody please remind the folks at "ACOUSTIC SOUNDS" about this huge upcoming event...I want the Steve Hoffman 45rpm version of this title, "THIS" year!

  17. It is always interesting to read the discussion here about a recording like this that continually gets remixed, remastered, tracks added, repackaged, new cover, etc. etc. I own what I believe to be the original Fantasy CD, and it sounds fine, it is a great recording and I don't plan on acquiring another version unless this one breaks. Am I the only guy here that thinks that way? There are thousands of recordings I might like that I don't own, why mess with another version of this one? Even if the version I owned wasn't the greatest, the music would still be and the incremental improvement of a new version not worth the expense. This is all a pretty funny exercise in futility to read about. Buying this for the first time and several choices are available, try to find the best one or best value, of course. Trying to replace the second best with the best or trying to own every version sure seems funny to me.

I understand there are some CD's that were terrible when first released or when remastered or have some serious issue and a version should be avoided. This wasn't one of them.

In any event, it is certainly a great piece of music.

I have the original CD also and I am quite content with it. I am interested in this new remaster to hear the alternate versions. The packaging, as described here, would make a nice Christmas decoration!

Still waiting on the 45RPM vinyl, though!

I would say that the majority of people who get excited about new versions are either audiophiles or collectors. For the former, a slight improvement in sound quality of a new version may be worth it (and for many, the process of comparing different versions is essentially their hobby). Collectors just have to have it for their collection obviously or they won't be able to sleep properly.

So, I like this board a lot. It can be a great resource. But sometimes, I just don't know what to make of some of the posts here. I currently have only the SACD of this release, which as we know from this thread, is not quite disliked but is also not lauded. But it has always sounded great to me.

Then you see a post like audiodrome's on the new release, which makes this release sound like absolute rubbish (with no disrespect to audiodrome intended--this is just his opinion which he is entitled to). Whereas most of the other posts I've seen here and elsewhere are at least somewhat positive. And then there's the review in post #103 of this thread, which says it is a fabulous release.

As always, I will let my own ears judge whether I like this new release or not. But I am always left to wonder what audiodrome heard that was so different from what the reviewer in post #103 heard.

I guess I just had a lousy first impression - I was expecting better! :p

To be fair, if I had never heard the original mix, this version would be OK, but it is definitely not an improvement - not even close.

Well, I have not heard the new mix but I understand what you mean by "space" or lack of it. This music was recorded with three open microphones and no baffles at all so the "creative leakage" that occurred in the recording process made for some fine "room sound" (same like on the first Beatles LP in stereo). You take away that sound (like collapsing to mono or changing the placement of the instruments in a remix) and you lose a lot of the sound cues that make something lifelike. I'm very sensitive to that and in some of the remixes I've attempted (and ultimately rejected) the sound of the room just vanishes and I can't do a damn thing about it. I found later that using as much tube gear as possible in the remix stage helps preserve the natural ambiance of the original session and no matter how small, it really helps the music SOUND like music.. Oh, and in a remix from a three-track tape it is CRUCIAL not to fold in the channels to make it more modern sounding. That really messes things up.

    Hi Steve,

Where was "A Charlie Brown Christmas" recorded? I'm curious! The original tube mastered Fantasy LP has always been the best version out there for me. I just regret my old copy is severely worn out. It's been played too many times on old compact stereos with too heavy arms. I need to find a clean original of this.

:agree: This is exactly how you learn first hand who's opinion you can trust on a large Forum like Steve's. BTW, I would trust Paul's opinion from past experience over someone whom I don't know, never mind how he hears or what equipment he's listening on. Who knows, maybe it sounds great on an all-in-one stereo system.

I'm not saying that the SOUND is particularly bad, it's the mix, and what they did with the stereo placement of the instruments, that's terrible. They basically folded everything into the middle, ruining the beautiful spatial ambience of the original mix.
