Glad this thread just keeps going and going...

A couple of suggestions for those of us who like to look something up in the older threads -- making the search feature work better:

    1. Identify with text what disc you are listing. If someone says "This is a great disc", then attaches a photo, how can I search that?

    2. Or someone says "I am ordering or listening to these recommended discs", and then attaches photos, how can I search for that ? One or two words to identify the artist in a post would help.

    Thank you.

If it's possible for me to post a photo with legible text, then I usually forgo additional text, particularly if a given item is OP anyway. But I usually give specific references to what I'm pointing to anyway.

You don't hear or see much of Midori anymore.
I remember when She made Her first debut and was the sensation at the time.
Now I guess She is just another Adult performer.

I have these from Her past in my Collection.

    $1,600 / 94 CD’s (82 vol.s) = $17 per disc.
(assuming Amazon has the disc count right)
Yeah, that’s a steep price, even for 10yrs ago. But I guess you're getting a nice book, shelving and real CD cases - not paper sleeves.

Is the remastering of consistent good quality throughout the set? And yes, I understand many of these are early recordings.

And how does the mastering of the same material compare to his "The Chopin Collection" box set?

I can say that the early recordings were mastered wonderfully by Ward Marston.

I have the Chopin Collection box but I don't own the same performances in the Rubinstein Collection set, so I haven't compared, sorry.

Just a reminder, this thread (and the 15 that have preceded it) is for anything to do with classical music. Post what you're listening to, what recordings you recommend, recent purchases, concerts, discuss works, composers, etc.

Also, beginners are absolutely welcome. Feel free to post any questions that you may have. This includes requests for recommendations for particular works/composers, etc. We are friendly and are happy to help!

I hope you meant "Now scratching", not Hitler's party and its secret ideological relation to these composers... :D

Yes now spinning!! disc two from the above set
Disc one was recorded at one of my favourite instruments by one of my favourite players Germani at the Royal Festival Hall organ, now under reconstruction it has been out of commission for far too long, I hope they can keep to the original voicing :)

Small world: this is my most recent foray into playing my 78s through the new preamp: Widor plays Widor--verrrrry sllllooooowwwwwwwwllllllllllyyyyyyyy by the standards of most performers I've heard on record. The gentleman was 89 (!) when he made this record, but I gather that the choice of a slower tempo than usual was deliberate, as he thought the more conventional choice too fast. (Ravel is said to have thought the same thing about his Bolero....)

I'm also obviously becoming an old man, since I prefer slower tempos more and more, especially after hearing so many "fast forward" HIP recordings where I literally can't catch melodies.

Considering how much mankind progressed in sports in last couple of centuries, I can assume that overall playing speed limit in, say, Bach times was relatively slow, so he or Vivaldi shouldn't be interpreted that fast.

Agree. Melodies cannot be discerned or appreciated as much if a work is played faster than the original composer envisioned it (as much as we can determine what that was). I notice works where a more deliberate, relaxed tempo is more enjoyable. Faster tempi are fine if a piece is meant to be played that way, but I don't like those few instances where a work that sounds "rushed."

George, thanks for digging up the performers for this Schumann set. The one big plus for this set is I probably will not have duplicates and Schumann symphonies performed on period instruments sound intriguing to me. The rosters of performers sound impressive enough for me: Szeryng, Eschenbach, Fischer-Dieskau, Mutter and Ashkenazy, etc.

It's not that the performers are bad in general, it's just that many of them (like Ashkenazy and Eschenbach, for example) are not really known for their Schumann. Others, like Pollini, I don't feel have a performance style that is suited to Schumann, or really any other Romantic composer for that matter.

    For example:

Here's Pollini in the Symphonic Etudes - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LbQZq00BWQo

And here's Rubinstein in the same work - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zK40IIey404&feature=related

I have a good number of Bach recordings by Rilling on single CD's already. These performances were also on modern instruments, which I generally do not favor for baroque works. Perhaps the Complete Bach Cantatas set by Koopman is a better bet for me ...

    Hello all,

Just dipping my toes into the classical waters again after many, many years of listening to exclusively rock music!

Are there any generalisations you can make about what to look for in good classical recordings? I'm basically picking up any early cd pressings I find, using the same basis I do for rock music which is that old cds frequently sound better - however I'd be interested to hear anyone's thoughts on whether classical music has ever suffered from the same horrible modern mastering issues!

My general findings so far are pretty much that anything on a major label, eg DG, Decca, Philips, seems to have fairly decent recording quality at least, whereas any cds I've picked up from no name labels have tended to sound like rubbish.

    Any thoughts gratefully received!
