Please select your favorite Moody Blues singles (up to 5 choices).

This covers the first 20 singles (UK and US) - from the group's formation (1964) until they took their long break after their 1974 tour. There were a few singles with different B-sides in the US. For clarity, I'm only putting down the UK B-sides.

There were 16 singles released after the Moodies reformed in 1978. It might be a bit much for one poll, so maybe we'll have a 'part two' to cover those later.

On AM I mostly heard Nights in White Satin back then. Moody Blues was definitely an FM rock station band in my neck of the woods.

My brother had an awesome mono Isn’t Life Strange single, maybe a DJ promo? Anyhow, sounds super different, drier mix, with Justin’s lead guitar way upfront. His jukebox failed and the record got ruined. Have never been able to find it again. Cool to hear though.

I'm Just A Singer edges out The Story In Your Eyes and Isn't Life Strange thanks to the B-side of "For My Lady", one of my very favorite Moody Blues songs.

In this case I can vote on both sides of the single, since I know the songs (mostly) off their albums:

    Tuesday Afternoon / Another Morning
Ride My See Saw / Simple Game
Watching and Waiting / Out and In
    Question / Candle of Life
Story in Your Eyes / My Song

Story in Your Eyes is my favourite Moodies song, and Simple Game is second, with Ride My See Saw also in contention. Both sides of Question / Candle of Life and Watching and Waiting / Out and In are terrific. I like Never Comes the Day a lot but the B-side less so. I like Cities a lot but have never been too fussy about Nights in White Satin, at least in comparison with many of their other songs that I like more. I like Isn't Life Strange but its B-side isn't one of my favourites either. So, since I liked both sides of Tuesday Afternoon / Another Morning, I picked that as my final choice. If its B-side were Evening (Time to Get Away), it would have been automatic!

Watching And Waiting is perhaps my favorite single of all time.

The other four are Question, Story In Your Eyes, Nights In White Satin, and Voices In The Sky

Go Now was the only 45 by the Moodys that I actually owned. For their second incarnation, I bought the albums.
I thought that Go Now was one of their very best songs, but the record was pretty hard on the ears. Even at a young age ( I turned 14 in 1965), I had a hard time understanding why the record company would release such a bad/distorted recording of such a great song.

I read somewhere that the single mix differed from the album mix, but I've never heard it. I do like the unedited eight minutes version on the remastered Seventh Sojourn CD. It's just majestic.

That would be a USA singles listing to include 'Story in Your Eyes' which was never a UK single release

    re 'Story in your eyes' as Justin put it;

'that was us being all arty and we REFUSED to let a UK single be taken off EGBDF however SIYE was put out as a single in the USA and thank goodness they did...!'

note Mike's 'Melancholy Man' and earlier 'Bye Bye Bird' were both massive as singles in France

The Moody Blues will forever live in my heart. My paraphrased attempt to recreate part of Rolling Stone's 1972 review of Seventh Sojourn:

"They are the Sistine Chapel of Rock Music..."

Considering my love for this band, my favorite 2 songs of their catalog are b-sides mentioned here:

    Out & In
    Candle of Life

Therefore, my selections from the list are:

    Nights in White Satin/Cities
    Tuesday Afternoon/Another Morning
Voices in the Sky/Dr. Livingstone, I Presume
    Watching & Waiting/Out & In
    Question/Candle of Life

On most days, my favorite album of all-time is Days of Future Passed.....

    All the best to you,
    GT

No, it was the only single off Every Good Boy Deserves Favour in the UK and US. Justin's memory must be playing tricks on him.

'My Song' was the B-side in the UK, and 'Melancholy Man' was the B-side in the US.
The single failed to chart in the UK, and made #23 in the US.

The Moody Blues - The Story In Your Eyes / My Song

The Moody Blues - The Story In Your Eyes / Melancholy Man

That's true about 'Bye Bye Bird' in France - a big hit over there. I was only looking at UK/US issues though. The Denny Laine lineup appears to have been bigger there than in the UK and US.

That was my first Moodies LP, except I bought it in Spain and it's title is Asi son Los Moody Blues (same meaning). I played it a lot and I still have it. It would be a few years before I had enough money to start buying the original CDs.

The track listing also provides an enjoyable opportunity to learn (or brush up on) some Spanish vocabulary:

Tough! It came down to the b-sides, since the a-sides are often so strong. I chose:

Voices in the Sky/Dr. Livingstone, I Presume
    Question/Candle of Life
The Story in Your Eyes/My Song
    Isn't Life Strange/After You Came
I'm Just a Singer (in a Rock and Roll Band)/For My Lady

I mean, something like this is just great. I love how all 4 singing Moodies take a lyric!
