On another list but not here so I'll add it for the next update... The Human League - Dare - Virgin CDV 2192 - Made in UK Not in TOC, in subcode only.
How does one find/confirm pre emphasis in the subcode? I understand that EAC will identify the pre emphasis if it is in the TOC but not if it is in the subcode as I understand is the case with the Abbey Road black triangle disc.
Read back, there is and old version of EAC (0.96pb3) (pre-beta3) that can scan the subcode. I think there is a link to it a few pages back.
A heads up for XLD users, the latest version added the ability to detect pre-emphasis in the subcode. To see it you need to make sure that the "don't detect pre gap, ISRC and MCN" is UNCHECKED. After opening the CD, go to the File menu and "Save Cue Sheet As...". You should see the "PRE" flags in the cue file if it was detected. Saves me a lot of time as I had to use the old version of EAC in parallels previously. Would be nice if it would show it without saving a cue file, but I'm not complaining that much.
Thanks for this very helpful bit of info - never would've noticed this new feature if you hadn't alerted us to it.
A few of mine with pre-emphasis that I think aren't on the list: Murray Perahia - Mozart - Piano Concertos 17 & 18 - CBS made in Japan by CSR MK 36686 DIDC 50051 Murray Perahia - Mozart - Piano Concertos 15 & 16 - CBS digital made in USA on inner ring MK 37824 DIDC 20025 Murray Perahia - Mozart - Piano Concerto No. 26, K.537, 'Coronation' - CBS digital MK 39224 DIDC 20031 Barenboim - Schubert Symphonies 2 & 8 - CBS Masterworks MK 39676 DIDC 20191
A new edition with "suspected" PE (confirmed by listening-- no flag in the TOC or the subcode): Eric Gale - Ginseng Woman - COL 496854 2 [Black-faced "Master Sound" edition] - Made in Austria - data ring S4968542000-0101 14 A1 Most of the rare Black-face Master Sound series discs that are found today are Japanese pressings, which **do** have PE flags. Apparently this disc was pressed with one of the Japanese masters that did have PE, but was not flagged as such at the mastering stage. (At that late date [1999], the engineers probably weren't expecting to need it...)
New Order: 'Low-life' (FACD 100, made in Japan) New Order: 'Power, Corruption and Lies' (CY-3109/ICY-1219 , made in Japan by Nippon Columbia)* *= strangely enough, New Order's album 'Movement' with the catalogue code CY-3108/ICY-1220 (so a difference of just one figure!) does NOT have pre-emphasis
a few others to add to the list, confirmed by my Meridian 518: Maazel - Wagner - Overtures mk 38699 Marsalis - Marsalis CK 37574 Marsalis - Think of One 35DP-75 Pet Shop Boys - Please CP32-5131
Earth, Wind & Fire, Raise! 35DP 15 has pre-emphasis. iTunes did not recognise it, but adding de-emphasis made the tracks sound the same as on my stereo.
Thanks for the heads up! This is a great feature update - and as far as I know, the only program on Mac that will check subchannel data for pre-emphasis.
I did a re-rip with the new version of XLD and can confirm that the generated cue sheet includes the pre-emphasis flag with every track.
No, losing the ability to read flags from the subcode was collateral damage when removing the ability to read track boundaries ("native TOC") from the subcode. That feature was removed because it could be used to circumvent a form of copy protection. The author of EAC said, at the time: There are alternatives to running an ancient, obscure version of EAC. On Windows you could use CUERipper (part of CUETools) and look for FLAGS PRE in the generated cue sheet after ripping a disc; it gets the info from the subcode. Or on any platform you could run the command-line app cdda2wav (part of cdrtools) with the "-j" option and it will tell you, without ripping first, if & where it found pre-emphasis flags, and whether there is disagreement between the TOC and subcode.
I picked up a copy of Saga - Heads or Tales today. It is Portrait RK 38999. It does not indicate pre-emphasis in the TOC. It does indicated pre-emphasis in the subcode but ONLY for tracks 6-9. Does anyone have the Bon Aire version to compare? Investigating a little further, it does appear that only the last 4 tracks have pre-emphasis. You can see it in the waveforms before applying it, the last 4 tracks are louder than the first 5. An oddity for sure.
And, once you play it correctly, with PE compensation, how is the sound ? Should I seek one out over my original UK Townhouse LP ? The remaster CD was not bad, but the "bonus" 2 tracks were/are driving me nuts...they should relegate stuff like this to a second CD, or leave them out altogether!
There is also 1st Japanese pressing VDP-58 pressing for Dare! That one is most likely unique mastering again but incredibly rare. You can see 32VD-1084 “black triangle” cd from time to time mistakenly considered as 1st press.
Found a US PCD2-5340 with PE in the sub this morning at the thrift, interesting it's the only blue ring I have with it also, is that the date in the matrix 5/88 ?
I just got the WG (Polydor 815 410-2) version of Saga - Heads or Tales and it has pre-emphasis indicated on all tracks. They are completely different masterings, no levels match either before or after de-emphasis.
