Working my way through Arrau's Beethoven cycle. 12-15 this evening. Gorgeous sound from Philips.

Also saw that Stile Antico will be in town next Saturday. May have to pick up a ticket.

The Cloisters would have been an excellent venue IMO ...

I received this set today. Hmmm...I think I prefer my Dumay/Pires set. His tone is far richer than Kremer's, and Pires certainly holds her own again Argerich--maybe a little less incisive at times, but she still plays with plenty of power.

Is it me or do they look like the proud parents of a baby that Martha is nursing?

After the Dowland, this popped up as an alternate selection, from the Roman School:

Listened to symphony no. 7 earlier today. Lovely lyrical music from a terrible era of Stalin terror.

The Prokofiev Concertos by Paik on the same label are excellent. (Though Beroff on EMI remains my favorite.)

Thanks for the recommendation. For the piano concertos I have been listening to the Browning/Leinsdorf cycle mostly.

Christiane Jaccottet was an excellent Swiss harpsichordist and I have a few of her recordings on both LP and CD ...

Yeah, a real shame as not much by this great pianist is easily available. The sound is not great (they use some NR), but the profound performances shine through. Like Yudina (by the way, her Beethoven Op. 111 sonata is the best I have heard for that work), it took me a long time to warm to Sofronitsky's performances. Sounds amazing today! I may so a Sofronitsky marathon this weekend.

    My pleasure. :tiphat:

That's a great set too, as is Ashkenazy's. Those wonderful works are blessed with many great recordings.

Skipping ahead about two centuries in French music to Debussy and the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center.
