Over the past few years Kraftwerk have been called the 2nd most influential band after the Beatles. Its looking now like the press is coming to the opinion they are the most influential band based on reports from the current UK tour. I must admit I've held that opinion many years now and it's in no way to compare them as a better band, simply just more influential.

Yes, that UK tour is drowning out the Sgt. Pepper's 50th Celebration.

I don't think it's really an either/or question here. Both have influenced very different parts of mainstream music. But since Electronic Music is a very important part of today's popular music, Kraftwerk sure stands up well to the Beatles.

It's based on influence on contemporary music, electronic dance music, hip hop, sequencer based music etc etc. Maybe not this forums users.

I thought it was Slim Whitman who was more influential than the Beatles.

"Autobahn" was on the radio a couple of weeks ago while I was in the car with my 19 year old daughter.

She reeled off a list of various favourite bands of hers (all current) who she said it reminded her of.

Definitely influential, no doubt about that.

They were a pop group from Liverpool. But why they're being compared to the mighty Kraftwerk is beyond me.

I thought that the NME established a few years ago that it is The Smiths who were more influential than The Beatles. Or maybe it was The Sex Pistols? ;)

Kraftwerk obviously did have an influence, but one of the two most influential bands ever? Nah.

The Beatles' time as influencers is OVER. The power of Kraftwerk's sheer melodic instincts and technical advances has more of a place in musical futurism than 'Hey Jude' will ever have. Who would the general public rather be- Coldplay or Daft Punk?

Kraftwerk are the future we should be embracing. And should have been doing so since 1975. Even a new recording of their albums that are 30-40 years old sound fresh and original. It gets me so excited about the possibility of how music can change form and still remain incredibly melodic or rhythmic. Or both.

    *or rather, Synthesise it!

I can tell you that both just released music in surround, and the way one release is superior to the other is not even funny.

i think both bands were influential in different eras, so it's not really possible to compare them both overall.

that said, the only thing i've ever owned by the beatles, is a vinyl lp of live at the hollywood bowl that my parents got.

otherwise, i have a few hundred items from kraftwerk.

    Maybe it's a generational thing?
The Beatles had been and gone by the time I started listening to music in the early 1970's.
They were the choice of my parents, not mine.
I know all of their songs, but not by choice of playing, only by over-hearing them over the years.

The Beatles are a great band, but the influence of Kraftwerk since the mid-1970's is arguably stronger and more wide-spread that The Beatles.
As was said above, the Kraftwerk influence is widespread.
I guess it all depends on what you listen to and who they cite as influences or inspiration.

Certainly two of the most influential bands of all time.

I feel fortunate to love them both.

I was too young to see The Beatles live, but I am blessed to have seen Kraftwerk live twice: 1974 and 1981.
