I’ve seen three of the dramatic movies, and at this point my favorite is Black Panther. Of the comedies, I’ve seen only Crazy Rich Asians, and I sure hope one of the others is better (come on, Favourite!).

Also, how Widows got left out of the best-drama category is beyond me. It’s a far better picture than BlacKkKlansman or A Star Is Born, IMO.

The categories of "Drama" and "Musical or Comedy" makes things interesting. I would have thought Green Book was a drama and A Star Is Born was a musical. But Green Book was very funny and A Star Is Born was obviously dramatic.

Golden Globes never really a good indicator of future Oscar love. film categories more broken up so as to have more nominees possibly show up at the awards. Globes is all about the party and who is invited/appears.

Better than "Klansman" but not "Star Is Born". "Klansman" is a mess, honestly.

"Widows" is a decent movie but also a bit of a mishmash...

Agree, though I think the trend of other awards shows that "Star Is Born" should get good Oscar noms...

Globes are very populist. Black Panther, Bohemian Rhapsody, Star is Born and Blackklansman were/are all good fun but 7/10 movies for me. Thought The Wife, Widows and First Man would do better. Looking forward to seeing Roma on Netflix next weekend. Cold War fully deserves all its Best Foreign Language nods (it’s Polish) and would make my best movie list, but I guess Roma could trump it (Spanish). Of course we’re still catching up a bit over here - the Beale Street movie looks interesting.

Looking at the SAG nominees reminded me: While watching BlacKkKlansman I kept thinking, “Who the hell is the lead actor and how did he get the role? He’s awful!”

Turns out he’s Denzel Washington’s son.

First revision: I'm taking out First Man and substituting Bohemian Rhapsody in Best Picture (much against my personal preference).

Boy, the SAG really want to give Emily Blunt an award. They nominated her twice. Love how they justified her getting a “supporting actress,” nomination for “A quiet place.” There’s no way in hell that was a supporting actress role that was the lead.

Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Supporting Role:
    Amy Adams, "Vice"
    Emily Blunt, "A Quiet Place"
Margot Robbie, "Mary Queen of Scots"

I can’t even believe Black Panthers getting a nomination. I finally saw it after all the hoopla, and it was just another ridiculously stupid comic book movie. Secret advanced African nation full of super secret agent princes flying around chasing some ridiculous relics. It’s embarrassing. But you know 20 years from now will be seeing Best Picture of the year: “Call of duty XX: Warlock.”

Calling Blunt a "supporting" actress certainly sounds bogus to me, but according to this all 4 main actors are just "supporting" each other:

Paramount's 'A Quiet Place' Reverses Plans, Entire Cast to Compete as Supporting (Exclusive)

    I see:

"Paramount Pictures and director/actor John Krasinski, among others, had previously decided to push Krasinski and his real-life wife, Emily Blunt, who play a married couple in the film, as leads, and the actors who play their children, Noah Jupe and Millicent Simmonds, in the respective supporting categories.

After additional consideration, though, they have decided the film is a true ensemble with no actual lead and will therefore push the entire cast in supporting categories. A Quiet Place's online FYC sites have already been amended to reflect this new strategy.

Though no one associated with the campaign will say so on the record, a key consideration in this change of plans is clearly Blunt. By going lead, the popular actress would have stood a slim chance of garnering a nom for A Quiet Place — the category is jam-packed with showier and more Oscar-baity performances that hit theaters far more recently than April 6, when A Quiet Place was released — plus she might have undercut her own prospects in that category for a forthcoming film in which she is the indisputable lead: Mary Poppins Returns, in which she plays the title character, a role for which Julie Andrews won the best actress Oscar in 1965."
