Got an old Technics SL8020 DC Servo Direct Drive Turntable
that changes speed, despite the screw adjustment on the undercarriage.

    Anything else to try?

Hmmm ... I'm guessing by the silence you guys are thinking,

"What the Hell are you doing with THAT?"

Not my call, but I'd have chucked it long ago.

Because of the problem, unit, both?

I'd have chucked it before "the problem". IMO, the unit itself is a hindrance to better sound. Sure, it worked and sounded OK, but you don't know what you have been missing until you experience a really nice Hi-Fi deck and cartridge. Many decks that didn't offer adjustments could damage records. Not sure about the geometry of your specific model, but if the cartridge is of the same vintage, then it should have met the bottom of the skipper long ago. Sorry, but you asked.

Thanks all for the gentle spanking. I'm familiar with them links.

Oh, I know. I've been mulling getting a better TT for years.

Any ideas within the $300 range? I'm on a looow budget.

    Thanks!

Probably just dirty speed pots. A little contact cleaner is usually the cure.

If you like your Technics, there are several similar units on eBay. A lot of these tables were sold, so they sometimes can be found at your local Goodwill.

Yep, I've begun that. At first looking for a cheap Mac,
but I know better than THAT happening.

I've been thinkin' this as well. No need to do more than
spray 'em then close the shell.

What I'd like is to clean it, get it back up "to speed" then
flip it. I really need to upgrade this thing to match the
    rest of my setup.

OT: Anybody know of a site with Mac cabinetry plans?

Decent condition Pioneer, MCS, and Technics DD decks pop up on my local Craiglsist somewhat regularly. With enough effort, you should be able to find a decent vintage deck for ~ </= $250.

OK, here's anudder question which should narrow things down.
We have a shaking problem in the house. Even footfalls are evident
when spinning LPs. What TT would help minimize this, other than
    getting a well-built house?

    You need a wall shelf.

I'd try an isolation platform with your existing table, first.

Wall shelves are fine IF your walls aren't as poorly built as the rest of your structure. But in older houses, doors and sufficient air pressure changes are usually enough to produce the same negative playback effects as footfalls.

I like the Luxman PD-272 TT. Micro Seiki TA-1 tone arm. Direct drive, electronics is all discrete, thus serviceable due to no extinct integrated circuits. About $350 used.
