...that is, music that was created to exist within the reality of a movie or TV show? Not theme songs or soundtrack tunes or the like. Not sure if this spin on the movie/TV show songs theme has been done before - although I expect to find out quick. In any event, my nominee is this classic by the Carrie Nations, from Beyond The Valley of The Dolls:

Feel free to nominate music from novels as well, if the description is interesting/vivid enough to make up for the fact it can't be heard...

In game the song is credited to Old Gods of Asgard and it's words have a bunch to do with the game's plot.

Those musical snippets in Austin Powers movies with Mike Myers as frontman are always entertaining and toe tapping, I apologize for not being techie enough to actually post a link.

Blues Brothers probably doesn't count because they put out at least one album separate from the movie, right?

Stillwater - "Fever Dog" from Almost Famous. I use this clip on my Blu-ray with the DTS MA 5.1 audio to demo my surround. No matter how much I turn it up, it never distorts. GORGEOUS!

The Hex Girls from a Scooby Doo direct-to-DVD movie. They have sort of a Wiccan Bangles thing going on...

  20. The Twylight Zones big audition for Jerry Ragovoy in the film Not Fade Away (2012). Iirc, Steve Van Zandt had a hand in the songwriting and arranging.

I love almost everything in the mockumentary A Mighty Wind but I think my favorite is The Folksmen doing "Old Joe's Place"

The more "polite" version of "Pretty In Pink" that Psychedelic Furs recorded for the movie soundtrack after the original, which is vastly superior, was deemed too raw. I don't believe there were any changes to the lyrics, but the production was polished and the guitar tone cleaned up a bit for the soundtrack.

As an aside, I'm not sure John Hughes really understood the song (or perhaps he just chose to ignore the metaphors). I've read that Richard Butler has said the song tells the story of a promiscuous woman who believes she is wanted and beautiful but is in reality belittled and ridiculed. It isn't a slut-shaming song, but rather it empathizes with Caroline and comments on how sad her life is (second verse), and how she seems to believe this is how a woman is expected to behave ("Caroline laughs and it's raining all day / she loves to be one of the girls")

That's not at all what the movie is about, or what the protagonist, Andie Walsh, is like.

That said, I love the movie, and no one chronicled being a teenager in 80s America as well as John Hughes.

It was all covers. The songs preexisted the movie, and the TV routines.
Not that i don't share your enthusiasm!
