Article Here: The night Bob Dylan talked

Bob Dylan, who reportedly has Minnesota ties of some sort, doesn’t speak to fans at his concerts, but that policy changed on Tuesday evening, Rolling Stone reports.

    Blame people and their smartphones.

Dylan doesn’t allow pictures to be taken during his concerts but the smartphones were out at a concert in Vienna and so Dylan stopped singing Blowin’ in the Wind and let the crowd have it.

“Take pictures or don’t take pictures,” he barked. “We can either play or we can pose. Okay?”

    The crowd chanted “play!”

Rolling Stone says he “then stepped backwards in an angry huff, tripped over a guitar monitor and nearly hit the floor.”

Of course, there’s video. Watch it before it disappears.

He left the stage one song later.

“I have never seen him so angry,” composer Hermann Rechberger, who shot the video, wrote.

I wish more artists would walk off and end shows if idiots are going to constantly have their phones out.

That's minor. Now if he went Tori on them and had them booted from the show, that's different.

At the last Dylan show I attended there was a preshow announcement that said something like: "This is a no-cell phone show. No photography or recording. If you are unable to comply, leave now. If you do not comply, you will be escorted from the premises."

Of course a few morons were all sneaky taking photos or checking messages, but no ushers in sight.

The industry really needs to somehow get together and get the smartphone thing under control. Cinema chains managed it.

Once again, Bob is absolutely right. Nothing like paying big money for a great seat for the privilege of having your view of the show blocked by a sea of IPads so you can only see the artists by watching their images on them.

According to the FB poster that attended the concert it wasnt simply the pic taking, its the flash. Best part is Bob's recovery. Id have twisted my ankle or worse lol.

Ive been a detractor over the last decade concerning Bob Dylans vocals but I ate my words back in October when I saw him live again. He really is doing some inner'esting stuff musically. From what I heard at the concert he is in one of his growth stages and at the top of his game again.

I hope the social media bs and things of this like doesnt detract him from the path he is on. His concerts, I believe, are very important to him and what he creates album wise.

All in all when I go to concerts I usually snap one or two photos or a little 30 second video just as a little memento and I don't think anything is wrong with that. However it is a "give an inch" thing because there are a lot of people who basically record full songs or some most of the show - and I can see as a performer how annoying it would be to look out in front and see people looking at you through their screens as opposed to with direct eye vision - and as an audience member I don't want to be distracted by glowing screens on for that long.

Ideally people would understand how amazing it is to be in the moment and only take a couple quick photos if they really feel like they want a visual memento, and then enjoy the show distraction-free. Unfortunately that would be giving the general concertgoing public too much good faith lol

Same - a few pics and a snippet of my favorite song and that's it.

I don't want to experience a show through a device.

Last time I saw Bob here in Winnipeg back in 2017 there was a "no smartphones" rule in place. I don't know how they pulled it off, but it worked beautifully. Imagine a full concert without one idiot pulling out his/her dumb phone. It was great. Phones should be banned from concerts altogether. People are completely addicted to the bloody things. Bunch of sheep.

Get used to it bob. I’d rather they just put the goddam thing down and drive. Be thankful you’ve never had to drive to work every day.

I have no doubt that he was angry, but it really wasn't that bad after seeing the video. I mean, it's not like he totally freaked out. And yeah I get the view that "people paid money, let them take pictures". But I support him, if he didn't want it for whatever reason, he had the right to say something.

There was a long time where it was very difficult to get anything resembling a camera or any type of recording device into a concert venue and now that everyone has a phone that can do those things, all of a sudden this is "acceptable". I think we're getting spoiled... :) (don't get me wrong, I've taken photos and videos at concerts too)

Good for Bob. Not sure why people think they can do whatever they want even if they pay a lot of money for it. I don't go into shows thinking I should be able to smoke cigarettes and do chicken dancing just because I paid to get in.
