Ranking Every Beatles Song (& Album)

Why? Well, why not?
It's not definitive, I'm on holidays and have no social life (or life) so I have way too much time on my hands and I love and know this band's entire output better than I know the back of my hand, so here it is. Every single Beatles song released by the band ranked from Please Please Me to Let It Be (and Free As a Bird and Real Love, with George Martin's Yellow Submarine tracks excluded as well as single versions of LP tracks or songs on Yellow Submarine already found on prior U.K. LP's excluded) as well as some other info on the list. And some of my choices are going to be either really predictable or really out there to the point where you might think it's a joke, but it's not

Anyone else feel brave (bored) enough to do their own list? Feel free to post yours below, preferably as a spoiler so we don't get massive blocks of text whilst scrolling.

The only songs I don't like are below 210. Yep, there are only 3 Beatles songs I legitimately don't enjoy.

I saw the top 10 was way too Lennon-heavy, and for a lark looked for A Hard Day's Night, and seeing it #108 (seriously?) knew OP and I were not on the same page. There many McCartney songs in my Top 10, and Something also makes it. "Different strokes" as they say...

I used to way prefer the single version, but after the 2018 remix, now I way prefer the album version (although I love both still and am glad they're separate)

Yeah, I'm much more of a Lennon guy pre-'68. And when putting this together, even I was very surprised where I was putting stuff on the list. I had always thought of A Hard Day's Night as a timeless, classic pop song that would be at around 40 at least if I had to guess, but then I look at all of the amazing songs afterwards and then I get why I placed it where I did. Same with the three legendary openers for With the Beatles. In my mind that album had one of the best 1-2-3 punch's I've heard but when I put the list together they ended up at only 119,129 and 79, but looking at all the songs after it began to make sense for me. So I'd think you'd surprise yourself in different ways in you put together a list

Very unique ranking I'd imagine! Great work! You're obviously a bigger early Beatles fan than me, and your number 1 pick surprised me. I love the song, but what about Ask Me Why do you love so much?

And Within You Without You is in my top 10 and your bottom 10, I think that says a lot about the band's musical diversity and how much tastes can differ with them!

 

I love "Ask Me Why". It's a great early period Beatles song, has some great vocal harmonies, I love the guitar tone used, the song is a wonderful love song and it has some nice little details in the recording such as John's acoustic guitar bleeding into the vocal mike giving the sound of there being 3 guitars on the track. Mainly the reason why I love it so much is because when I first decided to get into the Beatles, I took two days to get through their whole catalogue. Starting at Please Please Me, "Ask Me Why" was the first song I had to immediately go back and listen to again and it was the first song I had to listen to once I was done with the 13 studio albums and Past Masters. It just holds a lot of sentimental meaning to me and it constantly struck me as a favorite.

As for "Within You Without You", I love the whole Pepper album and I think it's a remarkable track in the concept of the album, but I made my list over 2 years ago. Way before the 50th Anniversary Remixes of Pepper and the White Album. I should update my list soon because some of the bottom tier songs might move up depending on how I feel at the given point of me ranking the songs.

(Also, Yellow Submarine I took the average from of the 4 new songs only. They're great (minus "All Together Now"), but not enough to sustain an album).

 

Nice! I think it's a brilliant song. I love the slow ballady stuff so it appeals to me quite a bit. And wow 2 days to get through all their albums? I've been listening to Led Zeppelin for about four years, they're one of my all-time favourites, and yet I only just listened to Physical Graffiti a couple months ago. Haven't heard anything after yet!
The remixes certainly boosted my enjoyment of many songs. Fixing a Hole wouldn't be close to number 11 on my list until the 2017 remix for example.
And yeah I did the four new songs only and agree with that, except minus Only a Northern Song. Definitely feel like left over tracks and I'm glad none of them made Pepper's, although I believe Only a Northern Song was the only one written for it?

Happy to see a few lesser mentioned Beatles tracks on there. Yer Blues is a favourite of mine that I never see mentioned anywhere. Long, Long, Long is hauntingly beautiful. Every Little Thing is simply a great understated pop song and And I Love Her used to be a favourite of mine but I think I listened to it too much.

 

Every Little Thing could have been a great single for The Beatles, or for someone else if they gave the song away. I sort of imagine The Righteous Brothers doing a big band version of it for some reason.

 

I went through all the Beatles albums when I was about 13, so I had a lot of free time. I remember it was in August, so I had time during summer break where I'd do nothing but stay home and watch YouTube and so I binged YouTube videos of the albums. Now I'm listening through Elvis Costello's discography and I've been at it since November. I'm taking more time to digest the albums and I'm going back in between albums to listen to some highlights.
And I would've loved "Only A Northern Song" on Pepper. It's so psychedelic sounding. Wouldn't sound out of place on Side 1 IMO. Plus Pepper only has 13 tracks and one George song, so adding a second track would still the continue the trend of 14 songs on an album (only interrupted by A Hard Day's Night).
