Well, first of all it would need to be shortened to just "transistor", as in my grandfather has an old transistor that picks up AM.

for as long as I can remember they were always records, albums and an occasional LP...the word "vinyl" became necessary with the advent of the CD...

when my kids were very young, and brought up in the CD era,
not having seen me play any records were freaked out when I got some records out and gave them a spin to see me flip an Lp over.
They never thought you could play both sides.

slightly off topic but what us old folks take for granted, some kids just don't have a clue how some things work.

Didn't hear anyone mess this up, though despite telling me friend it's not vinyls, still refers to records as vinyls. He comes shopping a lot but doesn't buy vinyl.

They don't know how to write the alphabet? You mean they don't know how to read? That seems a little fishy.

Well, I have a 60 year old friend who thought "charisma" (the quality, by the way, not the famous label) was pronounced with a "sh". These things happen. And they happen to all age-groups.

Oh yes I too love making fun of young people. Boring. And to the people like the cat who posted the rotary phone video, that hasn’t been the standard in homes for decades now, why should they even know how to use it? This thread is unnecessary (and yes despite that I’m putting in my 2¢)

The correct pronunciation of the common version of "vinyl" is "record".
That should be easier for them.

In the 70s the only time I called anything vinyl was when referring to linoleum floors or the siding on our house. I just had records or LPs. Same with everyone I knew. Maybe it was just a northeast thing.

If you never hear a word spoken but only see it in print, you can get the pronunciation wrong. I knew kids in college who pronounced Nico (of the Velvet Underground) as "Ny-co" with the long "i." Another pronounced the first syllable of "Fogerty" like you'd say the word "fog." They'd seen these names in books, but never discussed them with anyone.

But all that said, there are commercials on TV and radio for "vinyl flooring," so I don't see how teens today could miss that.

It was never called vinyl in the first place. we called them records, albums or LPs. Never vinyl, and definitely not "vinyls" (which isn't even a word).
