I recall Crow saying in an episode of MST3K,
“It really is more suspenseful when you don’t know what the heck is going on”.

  2. Heck, even Chandler got confused by The Big Sleep at one point.

  3. I’ve had fun with Legion but not so much some others. The X-Files gave me a headache as even when they did plan things out it seemed like Carter was making it up as he went along.

Not to pile on David Lynch (my favorite director) by Inland Empire was pretty confusing

  5. Lynch doesn’t really put together a conventional narrative into most of his more personal projects. I guess the best way to view his films are more as surreal dreams that touch on elements of reality.

Eraserhead is the least like a logical narrative. Imagine Magritte or Dali and you’ll get a sense of what his films should be viewed as. I enjoy some of them, some are a pretentious mess.

Some are going to be (as you found) more art than story.

Unless the viewer is really paying attention, I think Momento qualifies.

  7. I kind of like convoluted plots. Hence the reason I enjoy Chris Nolan. The difference between confusing and convoluted is down to how skilled the filmmaker is and how well the audience is paying attention.

I have a friend who loves watching "The Bold & The Beautiful" and whenever he tries to tell me what happened in the latest episode, I just sorta drop out. What is this show??

  9. Ultra low budget time travel drama Primer takes at least a couple of viewings to figure out what's going on.

Lost Highway. I had to read interviews with Lynch to find out what he was going for with that one.

Maybe not convoluted but goes from the light hearted comic girl bedding, escaping from husband genre to suddenly impersonating a dead gangster and from thereon the plot, characters and script get way to busy and it becomes a major fail.

    Bill Wyman's Digital Dreams

Cuts to all manner of short scenes that don't interconnect.
    Garbage for the most part.

Keep attuned every single second to this long one or you will lose an important thread somewhere and be tripped up for the rest of the film on some important twist.
Maybe I need to be an expresso drinker?

Jean Luc Godard's One Plus One aka Sympathy For The Devil

In 51 years has anyone convincingly described what this is exactly about?

N.b. You may well insert another of his films here......

It’s a bunch of trendy (at the time), revolutionary agitprop bollocks. Plus the Rolling Stones. Watch it for them and ignore Godard’s political agenda.

Somewhere on the internet is a giant chart that explains how many time loops there are.

"Turmoil has engulfed the Galactic Republic. The taxation of trade routes to outlying star systems is in dispute" wtf?

When you think about it the prequels are bat **** crazy in terms of plot.

So someone is hoping to gain power by creating a war caused by tax issues involving a clone army that he secretly arranged to have built many years ago. The only reason the clone army are ever discovered is because someone working in a bar recognises a dart used by cloners which sends someone off to investigate, otherwise their existence would not have been known?

I love the time travel genre, but yeah Timecrimes, Primer, etc are pretty damn convoluted if you are trying to keep everything straight in your head.

I liked Kingdom Hearts in that they didn't spoon feed us a basic storyline. Same with all the Dark Souls games, it's a "simple" story but it goes deep if you want to know more.

Part of the problem too is some of the side games like Dream Drop Distance have fairly crucial info in them, or so I'm led to understand. Then if you REALLY want to go through the rabbit hole, I'll just leave this here ( Sleeping Realm Theory / tl;dr, KHIII is all a dream)

I've heard that series is supposed to be good if you're a fan of RPGs (which I am), but I doubt I'll ever play it... I find the inclusion of Disney characters to be rather off-putting, and I just wouldn't be able to take it seriously.
