Art Pepper – Live In Japan Vol. 2 - The Summer Knows Label: Storyville – STCD 4129 Format: CD, Album, Reissue Country: Denmark Released: 1988 Alto Saxophone – Art Pepper Bass – Bob Magnusson Drums – Carl Burnett Piano – Milcho Leviev Tracklist 1 Caravan 12:55 2 The Trip 10:29 3 The Summer Knows 8:23 4 Red Car 14:47 I love these late, live Pepper dates. Plenty of stretching out and great playing by various lesser-known artists (at least to me). Drummer Burnett lays down some low-key shuffle on Pepper's The Trip which I really enjoyed.
"the KID" and "the BRUTE" - ILLINOIS JACQUET | BEN WEBSTER (Clef/Verve) CD with Alto Saxophone, Tenor Saxophone, Vocals, Percussion – Illinois Jacquet Baritone Saxophone – Leo Parker / Cecil Payne Double Bass – Al Lucas Congas, Vocals – Chano Pozo Drums – Osie Johnson / Shadow Wilson Piano – Johnny Acea Tenor Saxophone – Ben Webster Trombone – Matthew Gee Trumpet – Russell Jaquet 9 tracks recorded 1953. 6 tracks recorded 1954. Ben Webster only features on two lengthy tracks here and they were both recorded in 1954. Basically this CD compilation covers two different sessions involving three different line-ups. All six 1953 tracks (bar one) were originally issued on the 10" Clef LP JAZZ BY JACQUET. The extra track on the CD is a 78 RPM version of 'On Your Toes'. The 2017 CD edition was re-issued in cardboard gatefold sleeve. There is a great sound on all tracks but no mastering credits are given. The original CD was released on as part of the Verve Elite series and I guess the mastering here is a straight re-issue of that. This is an excellent compilation which over the last year has impressed me more and more with each and every listen.
Charlie Parker Memorial (1955). A real treasure. Even the false takes are gold. Bass – Curley Russell, Tommy Potter Drums – Max Roach Piano – Bud Powell, Duke Jordan, John Lewis Trumpet – Miles Davis

Grant Green – Alive! +3 Label: Blue Note – UCCQ-9482 Series: The 80 Works – Format: CD, Album, Reissue, Remastered, UHQCD Country: Japan Released: 15 May 2019 Congas – Joseph Armstrong Drums – Idris Muhammad Guitar – Grant Green Organ – Earl Neal Creque* (tracks: 2, 5), Ronnie Foster (tracks: 1, 4, 6 to 8) Tenor Saxophone – Claude Bartee Vibraphone [Vibes] – William Bivens* Voice [Announcements] – Buddy Green* (tracks: 3) Recorded August 15, 1970 in Newark's Cliche Lounge. My lord Muhammad is funky, and Bartee is fantastic as well here - of course Green just storms out of the gate on these tracks. Just a straight up funk-groove session. Love this album!
LIVE IN NEW YORK 1971 - PAUL DESMOND with MODERN JAZZ QUARTET (Gambit) CD Tracks 1-7 feature Paul Desmond (alto sax), Milt Jackson (vibes), John Lewis (piano), Percy Heath (bass), Connie Kay (drums) - recorded 24th December 1971 (or so it says on the sleeve) Tracks 8-14 feature Milt Jackson (vibes), John Lewis (piano), Percy Heath (bass), Mikey Roker (drums) - recorded live in Philadelphia, 1992 I bought this lengthy (79:15 minute) CD prior to being aware that Gambit is one of a number of labels operating out of Andorra that survive by cloning music from other discs or copying from other (unknown) sources. Sound quality is surprisingly very good here on both these live recordings. There is an 8 page booklet included, but no mention of who originally issued or recorded these two concerts.
Had just posted here some Desmond LPs: Listenin' to Jazz and Conversation Probably one of them is on your CD? Anyway I have a lot of Gambit CD's. All in good quality and with excellent booklets. Discogs files the label under "bootleg" but thats only their opinion.
