JAZZ in PARIS | HARD BOP - Various Artists (Universal/Decca) CD with Roger Guerin - Benny Golson - Bobby Timmons | New Jazz Stars A great 9 track compilation with a playing time of just over 40 minutes and featuring music originally recorded and released in the 50's. The CD was released in 2017 and presented in a cardboard gatefold sleeve. The sound quality very good thanks to co-ordination and mastering by Francois Le Xuan. All sleeve notes are in French. Tracks 1-4 were recorded by Roger Guerin, Benny Golson with Bobby Timmons. Track 5 is credited to Roger Guerin Quintet with Roger Guerin (trumpet), Benny Golson (tenor sax), Bobby Timmons (piano), Pierre Michelot (bass), Christian Garros (drums) All 5 recordings were originally issued on Columbia 10" LP FP1117 The remaining 4 tracks on the CD were recorded in 1953 and originally issued on the Vogue EP EPL 7081 New Jazz Stars credited to ART FARMER, James Cleveland, Anthony Ortega & others including Henri Renaud & Gigi Gryce. This was also issued on vinyl 10" in this sleeve... I was well pleased to find out that rare and classic recordings as good as these are still being made available - and on authentic / factory made CDs!

(LP Riverside Victor Japan "Riverside Original Recording Series" SMJ-6198) 1977 .... recorded April 29th, 1960 @ The Blackhawk, San Francisco.... Charle Rouse (ts) + Harold Land (ts) + Joe Gordon (tp) + Thelonious Monk (p) + John Ore (b) + Billy Higgins (dr) .... after recently satisfying my Thelonious Monk needs via the superb Jerry Gonzales "Rumba Para Monk" album I`ve decided to listen to the man himself (again) .... this live gig benefits heavily from an enforced frontline with both Harold Land and Joe Gordon instilling additional punch to the sound of the Thelonious Monk Quartet .... btw what more to say about Harold Land in the late 50`s/early 60`s .... outstanding music in beautiful aka Victor Japan vinyl sound ....
As well as my modest RSD Black Friday haul yesterday, I've also been collecting some jazz titles over the past month or so . . . From top: DMM, BN80, Analogue Productions, Tone Poet, Music Matters Jazz . . .
