just a bit of fun. no arguments please chaps

I've pretty much always thought of the Flying Burrito Brothers as the definitive version, but I'm leaning towards Ronstadt these days..

    what about you?

    cheers guys

If this thread turns some people on to James Carr, it will have more than served his purpose.

He was a towering talent. An absolute giant of soul.

James Carr is the definitive version. All the rest are pale imitations.

    woah there fella

    a) it's early doors
    b) as per above, I hadn't heard the Carr version when I originally set this up. it clearly deserves inclusion - and it's there now. so folk can change their vote if necessary
    c) your opinion is no more valid than anyone else's
    d) have a good un

Underground soul legend Lee Moses does it well, but the sermonizing part goes a bit off the rails talking about mosquitoes making love and whatnot.

Not to mention, it's the original version.

Well stated. I voted Burritos but yeah, James Carr’s is indeed incredible. Doesn’t make me a “joke” for voting for something else though.

Don't think I've heard Percy's version before, it's also terrific...that song is made for his style. Sounds like it was recorded at Muscle Shoals.

I know the song from The Commitments.
I made a play list of original versions of the Commitments soundtrack songs (several years ago). That was when I found out about Carr's version.
I have not heard or heard of the other versions - until now.

P.S. Looking at wikipedia - there are plenty of other versions.

And since he wrote it, his opinion carries some weight. He actually does a fine version on his 1994 solo album Do Right Man.
