    The Jackson 5

but reading here that they formed in 1967 (!)

    I’ll now say

    Blue Öyster Cult

He wasn’t in the band at their formation, he was brought in to replace their original leader and songwriter. The original Pink Floyd featured Syd Barrett. It did not feature Dave Gilmore. I really didn’t realise that this ‘original’ thing was such a hard concept to grasp.

Technically, if it hasn't got Bob Klose, it isn't the original lineup, but you know, whatever floats your boat.

Probably U2. I've seen older bands - Cheap Trick and Blondie for example - but none with the 100 percent classic/original line-up. (Cheap Trick had a new drummer, Blondie's had a few lineup changes.)

What does mainstream success have to do with anything? Many bands have released several albums before any mainstream success. Other many great bands never achieve any.

Recorded a demo, a single/EP, or an album? Bangles, Iron Maiden, Whitesnake for example have different line-ups on their first release than on their first LP.

The most acclaimed and successful line up that started in 1971, though they had been together since 1967 (they had a keyboard player who left before this).

I saw them on the reunion tour in 2014.

A tough question. I've seen many 70s bands, and the Comets (formed '52), but can't think of any with all original members. Weird.

Can't think of anything older than Kreator (formed in 1982). By 1992 they had added a second guitarist but still had also all three original members.

EDIT: No wait, the rockabilly band Restless (formed in 1978). Saw the original line-up in 2002.

@Silksashbash Officially released recording, either single, EP or lp.

This came up because ZZ Top had a different line up for their first single than their first lp. Dusty Hill and Frank Beard didn't join until after their first single was released but before the first album was recorded.

Some were arguing only the first album line up counts as the original line up.

Closest is Area in 2014 with all the surviving original members, otherwise none.

EDIT: no, shyte. Tavolazzi didn't join them until "Caution Radiation Area" so that doesn't count either.

Late 1980s I saw the Four Tops (with Temptations). Tops were formed in 1953 and signed to Chess records in 1956

That isn’t the original Police lineup! The Police had two lineups , the ‘original’ lineup with Henry Padovani and their second, ‘classic’ most successful certainly but NOT original lineup with Andy Summers. I saw the ‘originals in 77 - they toured and released a record with Padovani on the cover - you saw the ‘classic’ lineup on their reformation tour. But, successful or otherwise, Summers is a replacement. A hugely successful replacement, but a replacement.
I saw Roxy Music with Eddie Jobson. Jobson replaced Eno. I saw a spectacularly good Roxy Music show in the 70s, which is cool, but I can’t claim to have seen the original Roxy Music.

What is commonly considered as the original line up? When a group is signed to a major label and releases their first album. At least that is how I've seen it routinely stated within the SHF. So, that's how I roll.
