Since we're shut in for at least three and a half more weeks, I wanted to get ideas for gritty movies set in NYC in the 70s. I already have:

    Taxi Driver
    The French Connection
    Dog Day Afternoon
    Mean Streets

    Which ones am I missing?

Serpico. They dont get much low down than this gem from Lumet. Pacino puts in a very powerful performance. One of his very best
The saddest thing about the movie is that its a true story.

Smithereens - not gritty in the crime scene sense but you can experience the darkness of NY during that time period.

Excellent pick. Also, "Serpico" looks fantastic on Blu Ray. One of the best transfers Paramount did on the format.

Not NYC but fits the category like a hand in glove.

The Friends Of Eddie Doyle w/Robert Mitchum & Peter Boyle.

And if you haven't seen it, put it close to the top.

A Bronx Tale w/ Chazz Palminteri & Robert DeNiro

  19. Not gritty but Godspell is definitely interesting to watch nowadays as it's mostly filmed in a deserted NYC.

Superfly is very gritty and very NYC

The Seven-Ups was the 1st one I thought of when I saw this thread. Extremely underrated movie & very gritty! Great car chase in it too!

Hmmmm, I think I know what I might watch tonight.....

I'd love to see this film, but I don't think it's had a legitimate video release . I've see stills from it, and it looks like it has some great shots of 1970s Times Square
