I don;t know about any of that, I was just curious to know who the "dicks" were  And part of that is because I'm not at all familiar with the current C/W scene, or any current "popular" music for that matter, except for what I'm subjected to unwillingly on commercials or at a mall or something similar. I must say that my love of the genre stretches back to the earliest of country blues, western swing etc and up through the period that you're talking about.

I don't really think that Country and/or Western is the only genre for which this seems to be the case, and I often wonder if it's an issue of time, exposure and familiarity. Has anyone turned out as great a catalog of compositions as say Cole Porter, Gershwin, Rogers & Hart, Berlin? The Brill writers? But then, we have their contemporaries in Mingus, Monk, Coltrane, Davis, Ellington/Strayhorn, Rollins. The same question could have been asked then. And then their contemporaries in Shorter, Hancock, Corea and Tyner. Who followed them, is anyone writing Jazz tunes as prolific and enduring as those of the GASB or Mingus and Monk? Doesn;t seem like it in a purely compositional context. But I have a hard time judging because there's not 40, 50, 70 years of time between now and then. Is John Zorn or Dave Douglas as prollific and important? Today? What about 50 years from now? I guess you could apply this question to every genre at every timeperiod depending on your perspective.

I always figure that we, the music buying and listening public, are the ultimate arbiters of what we get. Deservedly so. Remember, Blue Note shelved several great Lee Morgan albums because they wanted another "Sidewinder" and the popularity of Coltrane allowed impulse! to recorde lesser-known artists and get their work out to the public.

I seem to have forgotten the original question.....

Roger Waters The Pros And Cons Of Hitch Hiking. I think the only Roger Waters solo album I’ve ever heard before is Radio K.A.O.S. Anyway this sounds very Waters-y (which may or may not be to an individual listener’s liking) but it’s got some good tracks.

I've got no clue where I heard about this release, but it is right up my alley. It's got a spacious, desert-rock, krautrock thing going on... Starts off with some drone guitar, ends up working in synth and it keeps evolving. The musician behind it is named Grant Beyschau and he played every instrument on the album. He's in a band called Myrrors which I need to check out. This was my first listen to any of his music.

Just had a bedroom Rush Jam-a-Long.

Rush is so much fun to play on guitar - their songs are challenging and technical enough to be difficult but not so much as to where you need to be John Petrucci (Dream Theater) to play them. Just enough challenge! :)

Here was the setlist for tonight:

Show Don't Tell (that riff is SO much fun)
    Anthem
    Bastille Day
    Fly By Night
    Virtuality
    The Analog Kid
    Digital Man
    The Camera Eye
    Red Barchetta
    Chain Lightning
    Caravan
    Headlong Flight
    Kid Gloves
    Afterimage
    Red Sector A
    Presto
2112 (yes all of it, lol)
Hemispheres (the first 14 minutes then I give up, haha)

    :)

That was fun! I mean, I can't play any of Lifeson's solos (I can improv great but can't learn solos for my life...) but everything else is fun, haha.

    10/10 Highly recommended.

Roger Waters Radio K.A.O.S. Had to put this on next out of curiosity; I probably haven’t heard it since it came out in the late 1980’s. The ‘80’s production is much more apparent than on Hitch Hiking, which sounded more akin to what he was doing in the late 70’s/early ‘80’s. I don’t think I’ll be revisiting it again any time soon but was fun to check out.

I've always loved this album. It's a song cycle which works really well and Clapton plays some exquisite guitar parts.

There is a terrific chapter on Sam Rivers in a book called Jazz in the 70's Diverging Streams.
Every chapter focuses on each year, what was happening in the States, Europe, but the
most fascinating chapter, or one of them, involved River's music in the 70's coming off of
what he cultivated in the 60's.

NP... just having got back from some brief holiday travel, it's all about poultry leftovers and
music from 'old, weird america'; the live take on the the song LA from Time Fades Away is
shine silver, the live set from '76 Chicago is pure gold.

I'm sorry for the things I've done
    I've shamed myself with lies
But soon these things are overcome
    And can't be recognized.

The acoustic set from Chicago, November 15, 1976 (late show), just a few days before
his performance at The Band's Last Waltz.
