Matt Damon as Will Hunting in Good Will Hunting. There was some rumblings between Affleck and Damon about which one of them should play the part of Will. After seeing it, couldn't imagine Affleck in that part. Damon played the insecure and cocky genius to perfection.

Steve Blum (voice actor) as Spike Spiegle in Cowboy Bebop. His voice is perfect for the character, and I've heard comments that it is the best English dub ever done of an anime.

Watched this again recently for what must have been the fiftieth time. Great movie and Steiger is fantastic in it. He walks and talks that role perfectly.

Hundreds, but the first batch that come to mind were Tom Cruise in Risky Business, Richard Dreyfuss in Jaws, Nicholson in The Shining, Uma in both Kill Bills, Michael Keaton in Beetlejuice, Tim Curry in Rocky Horror, and Pacino in Scent Of A Woman.

Actually, Tom Cruise seems to have been the perfect choice in a lot of his films.

I don't know - so much credit also goes to the writer, the director, the editor, casting director - but the one that popped into my head first was Paul Walter Hauser in Richard Jewell.

I also think Sydney Poitier's famous lines in the film wouldn't have been as famous if a great actor like Steiger hadn't set them up just perfectly.

With Magic there's always the consideration that it's an informal remake of a story in the 1945 movie Dead of Night where the role of the ventriloquist was played memorably by Michael Redgrave. So as with Lecter we have an outstanding example of someone else in (pretty much) the same role.

You could contrast the case of Branagh in Henry V (suggested by @wolfram above). There, he was successor to Olivier playing the same part on celluloid as a sort of “national hero” but there's so much more to Branagh's performance: a mixture of youthful arrogance & puritan inflexibility that gelled perfectly with the actor's own public image.

We've had Hopkins a few times in this thread which makes me think that a very good actor will often appear to be perfectly cast. Magic is a great role for him and I much prefer his performance there to his rather hammy performance as Lecter, but I'll say again I think that it's Remains of the Day where it's difficult to think of another actor playing the part.

great post... yes DON is a great part of the movie, but Magic drives this story to the Universe...I don't compare them then I would have to compare every single ventriloquism horror movie or TV show...

The Coens are the masters at this because they actually write the part with a specific actor in mind. Then you get performances like:
    John Turturro in Barton Fink
    Jeff Bridges in Big Lebowski
Javier Bardem in No Country for Old Men
    Steve Buscemi in Fargo

Or is the quintessential Buscemi performance Reservoir Dogs?

I think the Coens got a much better performance out of him. All he had to do in Reservoir Dogs was act totally indignant, especially with the Mr. Pink bit that is pure Tarantino. It just doesn't hold up to repeat viewing the way the Coens write him into Fargo.
