I agree. I've remarked here and elsewhere before that Dvorak somehow always manages to seem optimistic.
Now playing: Luigi Dallapiccola - Orchestral Works, Vol. 2 - BBC Philharmonic - Gianandrea Noseda - recorded 2009
Outstanding! I love Bernstein’s traversal of Mahler on Columbia. Certainly explosive performances captured in great sound.

They were both French? If you read the blurb on the back cover, it mentions Van Gogh's Starry Night as an inspiration for the Timbres, so perhaps that would have been more appropriate as a cover. Edit: Just googled "Dutilleux Gauguin" and it appears that his Symphony No. 2 was inspired by that painting of Gauguin and especially its title “D'où venons-nous? Que sommes-nous? Où allons-nous?” ("Were do we come from? Who are we? Where are we going?").
On the turntable: Rachmaninoff / Byron Janis / Antal Dorati – Concerto No. 3, In D Minor, Op. 30 Mercury Living Presence – MG 50283
Very cool. I just read about that connection between Dutilleux’s 2nd symphony and the painting by Gauguin. Interesting. Thanks for the feedback.
