I've never referred to records as vinylit's akin to calling guitars axes for me. No it's a monocle. People wear them because they are only short or long sighted in one eye? I'm not sure.
In your examples, vinyl is used as an adjective. However, when folk say, "I'm going to spin some vinyls", vinyl is being used as a noun in its plural form. One always has to define a word class in the context of the sentence it is used in: The football was round. Adjective I made a round of sandwiches. Noun The cars round the bend at speed. Verb I walked round the park. Preposition
Yes you have to take the context of the sentence. But, I see nowhere that vinyl is a noun. Vinyl is a compound that is made into something like flooring, siding and records, you don't have vinyl (the product) in a state that can be a noun. It is chemical ingredients, then made into a compound that is formed into something, vinyl can't exist in a state by itself therefore can't be a noun. I know the younger folks like buying and playing vinyls but it simply is incorrect. I'm sure I won't change anyone's mind and vinyls is/will be acceptable use. However, my mind will not be changed either and if I hear someone refer to buying vinyl or spinning vinyl I'll assume they are uninformed and ignorant on this subject. I'm ignorant on many subjects myself but make an effort to learn and be informed on things I'm interested in.
Think it must be vinyls like in the group “Vinny and The Vinyls”. They’re very plastic sounding though.
Vinylae. The singular is either vinylum or vinyla—the former being preferred to eliminate any confusion with "vanilla."
Far be it from me to diss anyone with as cool a tagline as "El sirviente del Gato" but of all the things in life I'd love to see resurrected, this thread wasn't one of them!
I felt similarly, but like like la gata, I sometimes react to stimuli in the moment and leave it to [other] humans to respond as they will.
posting for a friend who is a bit of a grammar pedant..... Vinyl is an adjective .... thus talking about vinyl record (singular) or vinyl records (plural). Vinyl is not a noun. Discuss! you gotta luv it all
I already went down this route........ Don't even remember the reply. Something to the effect it depends how you use it.
It's just as well you're not, else you'd be kicking yourself for a couple of lapses in your capitalisation
“I’m heading over to the Vinyl Store for a while, see you later.” ….or maybe…. “I can’t wait to see the list of new releases for Vinyl Store Day.” When it comes to this we’ve lost the battle, keep up the good fight Record brethren!
i find it ironic that this subject comes up this morning because it has been spinning around in my lonely skull. this is not meant to be a persuasive argument, but an illustration of how my mind works. Vinyl Record. Vinyl is the material, record is the format. Is there a mixture of multiple kinds of vinyl making up the record, if so I can stretch my mind around "vinyls". Otherwise in my old man geezer get off my lawn world if I leave The Attic (my local brick and mortar) with several individually wrapped items in my bag, I have purchased records.
