I think they just need to do: Best Actor - Comedy or Musical Best Actor - Drama Best Supporting Actor - Comedy or Musical Best Supporting Actor -Drama "Actor" being whatever gender/pronoun. It's still 4 awards.
The Case for Gender Neutral Acting Awards (msn.com) Also, they don't give an award titled Best Costume Designer Female / Best Costume Designer Male- why bother having gender specific awards? I don't think they should lose 2 awards doing this so splitting up Comedy/Musical & Drama would help that. I think most actors would be against it if there was a less of a chance to win by taking away 2 awards opportunities.
Let's face it, the most popular categories are the acting categories, Best Picture and maybe Best Director. Why remove two of them? Heck, they should probably have more acting categories to get fans even more excited.

Agree. Movies are male-centric and simply tend to have more good roles for men than for women. If they eliminated the gender-specific categories, this would likely mean fewer noms for women.
In any given year, that might happen. But I think in general, a gender-neutral acting category would hurt women.
Exactly. I dunno - dropping gender-specific acting categories seems like a solution in search of a problem. Is there any actual outcry about this?
That's a good point, but I'd argue the difference is that other categories aren't as "gender equal" as acting is. Yes, I did just mention that there tend to be more good roles for men than for women - the Bechdel Test exists for a reason. And there tend to be more LEAD roles for men than for women, so it's a bigger pool, at least in that category. But I think the non-acting categories tend to be more "gender specific". Of the last 10 costume design Oscars, 9 went to women. Of the last 10 musical score Oscars, 9 went to men. In the technical areas, one gender tends to dominate the job period. So it'd be much harder to split those into gender categories because they're not even close to equally represented by both genders. Acting essentially is equal.
