Fantastic album. Maybe his best. Elvis wasn't really an ' album ' artist if you know what I mean. The only other album of his that comes close to the quality of this is the first Memphis one. And I think ' Elvis is Back' is better.

Bought this when it was released. Fifteen year old me was very impressed. Still enjoy it . One of the greatest album covers too.
I remember doing this before and also doing a top 100...so I took 10 out of my top 20. The other 10 could have been there instead. Or indeed a lot of the other 80... God! Just looking at so many great titles above and easily another hundred in my head. Ten All-Time ? Only 10? Inconceivable!
My Top Two, then in no particular order: 1) FLEETWOOD MAC ~ "Tusk" 2) FANNY ~ "Fanny Hill" 3) DYAN DIAMOND ~ "In The Dark" 4) CARLY SIMON ~ "Spoiled Girl" 5) KIM CARNES ~ "Barking At Airplanes" 6) TOM PETTY ~ "Hard Promises" 7) BONNIE RAITT ~ "Green Light" 8) THE MOTELS ~ "Careful" and my only repeat act, from two VERY different stages in her career: 9) ROSANNE CASH ~ "Rhythm & Romance" 10) ROSANNE CASH ~ "Black Cadillac" I can't believe some of the artists and albums I'm leaving out!
I find it hard to split the two. So when these come up I kind of alternate them. Elvis is Back is one of the best sounding stereo albums I think of easily, and it is a 1960 recording and issue.... it always makes me wonder why so few followed this template, even Elvis' people. Sadly many Elvis albums aren't all they could have been. I know they started off virtually totally singles, with albums as almost an afterthought, but by the time we get to 65-66 the management and record company needed to stop thinking so narrowly. By the time we get to the seventies whoever was compiling the albums seemed to just throw some songs on there with little or no thought .... but don't misinterpret that as me not liking them, I just think they should, and could have done better.
