Was it Harold Stringert? I thought he was from Makiki.

Did you know Glen Kaneda? He lived on Kinau Street. He was my best man when I got married.

I think the music was better in 1969 then in the previous years, 1969 was the first year in a series of my favourite years, spinning from 1969-1976.

Born in 72 and reaching my teen years in the 80s I found older music just as appealing (moreso actually). Likely due to my parents listening to stations that played 50s and 60s. My first album purchased of the 69 year, The Chicago Transit Authority. They became my favorite band cause as a trumpet player I liked horn parts

Though I didn't exist at that time yet it's one of my favorite years in music. Of course many great examples were mentioned here already.
Pink Floyd made a bunch of noise with the More soundtrack, Ummagumma, The Man/The Journey concert series, Zabriskie Point... all done in 1969.
By the way... Woodstock, wow! Hope a nice new box set is in the works!?

You can't escape 1969, in our cases. It has followed us everywhere like a tracking device, and will eventually be etched in stone beneath one's name! Luckily there was a lot of good music happening that year to help understand the times.

 Great post! I'll be hitting the big 50 later this year too, so maybe I'll do the same. :righton:
Of course, any reissues featuring me likely wouldn't even make the cutout bins, as the material would be deemed unsuitable for release. :cop:

I was just thinking about this the other day when my brother took his '69 Camaro out of the garage for like the first time in 15 years. I was like, man--this is a 50 year old car! I remember when they were merely "used cars."

So it is with the music. While some of it is indeed dated, there's a lot that's classic, and some that's timeless.

It's sad because Five Leaves Left was the best release of 1969 by far.

  16. It was a cool year. Everything from Sunny Pop music to the beginnings of prog and some killer jazz being product.

  17. Five Leaves Left blew away Elton’s first album. Most of us then thought that the following year’s Elton John was his debut that is until Your Song got lots of airplay and we saw his first album as a JEM import at some dealers.

Well, I was 2 years old ... but it was a great rock year, I have so many albums from 1969. My faves, off the top of my head:

    Abbey Road
    Chicago Transit Authority
Deep Purple - S/T and Concerto ... (yeh, have to be in the right mood for it, I know)
    Grateful Dead - Aoxomoxoa
In the Court of the Crimson King
Neil Young - Everybody Knows This is Nowhere

Interesting thing is that Woodstock happened in the summer of 1969, but for the great majority of us, the "Woodstock experience" happened in the summer of 1970, when we all saw the amazing movie on the big screen. I remember Rolling Stone magazine wrote a fictional essay about a person who kept acting like he had been at the actual Woodstock festival, but really only saw the movie. I guess that was a common phenomenon at the time.

Bingo! I can't say I remember GK but the name sounds vaguely familiar. Being so long ago, I'm surprised I can remember my own name. Kinau was a couple of streets up from where we lived.

I graduated HS in June 69 in SF. Tommy was just released and 'I'm Free' was all over the radio.

Boy, Harold Stringert! He was a great player! Played for the Chargers for years, right? Were you as good as him?
People are amazed when I tell them that back then, Honolulu HS games were carried on the radio and that for awhile, Al Michaels (of Monday Night Football fame) used to call the games (with Chuck Leahy). I still remember Harold catching passes from Kaipo and hearing Al say on the radio "I don't think I have ever seen anyone get so open and so often as Harold Stringert!"

That random list of 12 names I gave you included 5 Division 1 players, 2 of which went on to play in the NFL.

(Again, sorry to everyone for hijacking this thread.)
