Mott The Hoople's self-titled debut album is released on Island Records, produced by Guy Stevens - who also named and assembled the band by teaming up singer-songwriter Ian Hunter with a noisy band called Silence - naming the new group after a novel called Mott The Hoople (about an eccentric who works in a circus freak show). Stevens supposedly wanted to create an album that would suggest Bob Dylan singing with the Rolling Stones. This was partially achieved, with the album including several Dylanesque cover versions along with aggressive rock originals. The album will make it to #66 in the UK charts (and to #185 in the US when released in 1970).

Here, the Hoople tackle Sonny Bono's 'Laugh At Me'.

The Rolling Stones appear on The Ed Sullivan Show on CBS, Sunday night from 8–9 p.m., Eastern Time. It is their fifth and final time (after yearly appearances from 1964-1967) on the show. "Gimme Shelter" opened the show, while the show closes with "Love in Vain" and "Honky Tonk Women." The band mimes to pre-recorded tracks as Jagger sings live.

Ed Sullivan had flown to Hollywood where the Stones taped the performances at CBS' Television City on November 18th. These were edited into the show to appear like they were in New York. Ella Fitzgerald also appears on this episode. The long-running variety show (since 1948) would be cancelled in 1971.

Blue Afternoon by Tim Buckley is released, on Frank Zappa's Straight record label. The album uses the same group of musicians as Happy Sad, with the inclusion of drummer Jimmy Madison. During the same four weeks in which he recorded Blue Afternoon, Buckely also recorded its follow-up, Lorca, and material for Starsailor.

They had appeared on Ed Sullivan twice in 1966 so this was in fact their 6th appearance on the program.

John Lennon and Yoko Ono are in Room 4 at EMI Studios, Abbey Road, working on what Lennon hopes will be a Plastic Ono Band single - 'You Know My Name (Look Up The Number)', backed with 'What's The New Mary Jane'. Apple will even announce a release date of 5 December 1969. However, this never happens, as supposedly the single is pulled when the other Beatles find out.

Instead, this day’s edit of 'You Know My Name (Look Up The Number)' becomes the b-side of the 'Let It Be' single (in March 1970). 'What’s The New Mary Jane' will finally see official release in 1996, on the Beatles' Anthology 3.

I was 12 and not yet affected by music. For me, 1970 -71 was where it all started, though some of the music that caught me was from the few years previously. I remember learning that Hendrix and Janis Joplin had both died, and being shocked at the finality of this.
