I remember seeing some around 1983 or so. They had them under the glass counter in this super-high-end audio store, and they had like Court of the Crimson King and Born to Run and two or three other titles that were the sort of albums that already had Mobile Fidelity versions out on vinyl. Probably a copy of Dark Side of the Moon.

I had no idea WTF they were and didn't find out for a year or two, IIRC (since I didn't usually go into super-high-end audio stores). I probably saw them again in 1985 or 1986 and I remember that 1987 was the year when Sgt. Pepper came out on CD and it seemed like everyone was buying a player (I held out until 1991 or 1992).

The singles are now available individually for streaming or download. I just purchased all four from Quobuz. They are flat transfers, no compression or remastering done, but they are all from masters. The only song not included is one of the best, Many Times from the flexi that originally came with the Nothing Doing 7". But I think this material now being available has encouraged me to cancel my reissue submission.

Ah, bummer! But, thanks for the update. At least they're not compressed. I reckon I'll stick with my needledrops, though.

Agreed; very strange why nothing from the Payolas has been released other than the 2 collections and an EP from 2007 when they reformed for a bit.

The lead singer has 6 releases and all but the last are on CD; the voice is still the same although the music is a bit folk-ier than the Payolas but thankfully not much filler on each release. If only his last release "No Gods, Just Men" was on CD! <sigh>

versionsound The six strings that drew blood

Out of the Trees is their first two EPs. Huremics is a straight reissue. Vibrating Air was partially re-recorded and completely remixed. Sound Pool is Huremics, the original version of Vibrating Air, and their song from Lonely is an Eyesore. The versions of “Gunnet” and “Soarn” from Vibrating Air are on the Extractions CD. The other two tracks from OOTT are indeed unavailable on CD.
